Today the Governor of Florida vetoed a very bad bill.
This bill, Senate Bill 6, would have put Tallahassee bureaucrats in charge of our community schools. It would have punished even good teachers and would have forced some of our best educators out of a job. And it would have threatened the very real progress and improvement our children are benefiting from every day.
While I strongly support true accountability and honest incentives, SB6 was an ill-conceived shell game that would have been played with our tax dollars just to push someone’s agenda.
Why did Governor Crist veto it?
Because you spoke up…you told the Governor to support reforms that will improve our schools…you told him not to punish hard-working professionals…and you spoke loudly.
It is my understanding that the Governor’s Office received thousands of calls and emails every day and that those calls came from regular people – people who care about improving (not destroying) our schools – and not from politicians or lobbyists.
Sometimes it is easy to lose faith in the system of government, but today it is great to know that the people of this state made a real difference.
Today’s victory does not belong to the insiders and dealmakers. Today’s victory belongs to you and our children.
Thank you and congratulations.
