Senator Gelber on Budget Vetoes

May 28, 2010 Government No Comments

TALLAHASSEE – State Senator Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach)on Friday released the following statement regarding the Governor’s budget actions:

“I’m glad Governor Crist vetoed some of the ideological pork in the budget like the stem cell research ban. I’m also glad he provided some protection to the most vulnerable of our citizens by rejecting health care cost reductions.

“Many will try to divine whether certain vetoes were some form of political payback or reward. Veto intrigue aside, ultimately this budget still fails to adequately fund public education. I disagree that the budget is good for Florida’s school children. The legislature cut school funding yet again but then employed disingenuous accounting to make it look like a miniscule increase. The truth is that this budget actually cuts school spending further rather than restore the billions taken from public education over the last few years.

“Significantly, the budget funds schools at well below what our Board of Education had asked for and what the Governor requested.

“It is an unacceptable budget because it falls short on its most important mission of educating our children.”
