Governor Crist Signs Teen Dating Violence Education Legislation Into Law
JACKSONVILLE, FL – June 8, 2010—Representative Mia Jones (D-Jacksonville) worked with the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) and Moms and Dads for Education (MADE) to ensure that all young people are educated about the devastating consequences of teen dating violence and abuse. On Friday June 4, Governor Crist signed House Bill 467 (Teen Dating Violence Education) into law. As part of their curriculum, student in grades 7-12 will be taught the warning signs of abusive behavior, what healthy relationships are, and who to contact if they or someone they know is an abuse victim.
“By passing this teen dating violence education legislation in Florida, Rep. Jones has shown her continued dedication to raising awareness on this issue,” said Robin Read, President & CEO of NFWL. “She has worked to change the thought nationwide, bringing much needed attention to these acts of violence that often go unnoticed until a young woman is found badly injured or worse, murdered.”
“It is vital that all sectors of society come together to address this issue and break the cycle of abuse,” said Jane Randel, Vice President of Corporate Communications for Liz Claiborne Inc. “We fully supported Rep. Jones’ commitment to passing this legislation encouraging education on teen dating abuse in all middle and high schools in Florida.”
“Dating violence has reached epidemic proportions, resulting in thousands of preventable deaths,” Representative Jones said. “We all have a responsibility to do our part to end this vicious cycle.”
