Tallahassee, Florida – The Foundation for Florida’s Future congratulates the Sunshine State for winning Race to the Top, a federal competitive grant program designed to improve the quality of education in states across the country. Florida was one of ten states to earn a grant in the second round of the program.

“Thanks to the leadership of individuals, such as Commissioner Eric Smith, Florida is again recognized for its commitment to bold reforms to transform education for the 21st century,” said Patricia Levesque, Executive Director. “However, success is never final and reform is never finished. Florida’s next Governor and legislative leadership must renew our commitment to reforms that will better prepare students for college and 21st century careers.”

Commissioner Eric Smith is the architect of Florida’s application to the U.S. Department of Education. Florida’s proposal requires teachers to be evaluated and rewarded based on student learning.
