FSUPD and Leon County Multi-Agency DUI Strike Force to Conduct Labor Day DUI Checkpoint

September 3, 2010 Education No Comments

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –– The Florida State University Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on campus the evening of Sept. 6 on West Jefferson Street in front of Dorman Hall. The operation will be a part of The Leon County Multi-Agency DUI Strike Force’s efforts to reduce impaired driving during the holiday weekend.

“Unfortunately, history tells us there’s an increase in DUI related crashes during holiday weekends. We want to do everything in our power to ensure that this doesn’t happen in our community, on our campus,” said FSU Police Chief David Perry.

FSUPD has recorded 139 DUI arrests so far in 2010 by its officers due to continued focus on enforcement of impaired driving. Analysis of arrest records has indicated that fewer than half of DUI arrestees on campus are students.

“These checkpoints are a great way to educate our community,” said FSU Police Maj. Jim Russell. “We want to spread the word widely about the dangers of drinking and driving.”

The Florida State University Police Department is an award-winning, accredited, full-service law enforcement agency with primary jurisdiction on property owned or controlled by The Florida State University.

By Jim Crochet, State Ombudsman To celebrate National Volunteer Week, I want to recognize the group of nearly 300 volunteer ombudsmen who give so much of their time and energy advocating for over 160,000 Floridians living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family-care homes.
