Thanksgiving Travelers Urged to Use Caution as Potentially Dense Fog Affects the State Through Saturday

November 23, 2010 Government Comments Off

TALLAHASSEE — Florida Division of Emergency Management officials are urging residents and visitors to use caution during the Thanksgiving holiday as patches of dense fog
may affect North Florida roadways through Thursday morning and extend into Saturday across portions of Central and South Florida.

“An increasingly humid air mass ahead of an approaching cold front, along with warmer than normal overnight temperatures and calm winds, will create conditions that are favorable for dense fog formation across much of the Florida Panhandle and portions of the Florida Peninsula each evening and early morning,” said Amy Godsey, State Meteorologist.

“The dense fog is expected to lift by mid-morning. Until then, motorists travelling in these areas should remain alert and prepared for sudden drops in visibility”.

RE:      Senate Committee Members

Senate President Mike Haridopolos today announced to Senators the members of all substantive Senate committees. Membership on the Budget Committee and Subcommittees will be announced the week of December 6.

President Haridopolos’ memo to Senators is attached and found below and attached.

It’s noteworthy that selection of committee members was determined by individual Senators themselves.  Each was asked to list his or her top 10 committee choices ranked in order of preference.  Membership and size of each committee was determined by those responses.

Fellow Members,

As I have mentioned many times these past few weeks, it is my vision to have the Florida Senate be a member driven body.  To that end I asked Senator Dennis Jones and Senator Nan Rich to ask each of you to share with me your committee choices in priority order (top ten).  I have strived to give members their top choices.  As you already know every Democrat will be the Vice Chair of their number one choice with the exception of one Democrat who will get his second and third choices because his top choice conflicted with that of one of his fellow members and two Democrats who will Chair standing committees.

Florida Highway Patrol Increases Enforcement for Thanksgiving Travel Period

November 23, 2010 Government Comments Off

~ Efforts aim to reduce the number of crashes during the holiday ~

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Thanksgiving holiday is a peak travel period for families nationwide. Florida is no exception, with its inviting climate and numerous vacation options. Because Thanksgiving typically produces a high volume of motor vehicle traffic, the Florida Highway Patrol will increase its presence on Nov. 24 – 28. All sworn FHP personnel, including those typically assigned to administrative duties, will patrol Florida’s high volume roadways during the five-day period. Auxiliary and Reserve troopers will volunteer to augment the Patrol.

Troopers will direct their enforcement efforts toward impaired driving, speeding, following too closely and other aggressive driving behavior. In addition, troopers will strictly enforce safety belt and child restraint laws.

“The Florida Highway Patrol is committed to making Florida’s highways safe, and we plan to do that by bolstering our forces to reduce the number and severity of crashes,” said FHP Director, Colonel John Czernis. “During this hectic time, it is easy to lose your temper while driving as evidenced by recent incidents of road rage. Our troopers are prepared to take immediate action to stop others from placing innocent lives at risk, whether the weapon is a gun or a vehicle.”

Little Wren Speaks with a Big Voice

November 23, 2010 Opinion Comments Off

By Jessica Basham

If you’ve ever wondered which bird sings the familiar, loud “doodalee, doodalee, doodalee” song, it is one of the most common backyard birds in Florida, the Carolina wren.

The Carolina wren is a lively little bird that often fluffs itself into a puffy, round shape to appear larger than its 6- or 7-inch body.
For its size, the male has one of the loudest voices of all birds.

After Voting For the Obama Agenda, Bill Nelson Now Lashing Out at Obama as His Election Nears

TALLAHASSEE – Sen. Bill Nelson has been a reliable vote for the Obama Washington agenda of record spending and debt. He supported the failed “stimulus,” Obamacare, and countless other policies that Floridians rejected and have only resulted in higher unemployment, record spending, and record debt. Yet, now, with a reelection campaign on the horizon, Sen. Nelson is suddenly lashing out at President Obama.

According to the Politico today, “…typically mild-mannered Bill Nelson of Florida – lit into President Obama during an unusally tense air-clearing caucus session on Thursday… Nelson told colleagues Obama’s unpopularity has become a serious liability for Democrats in his state and blamed the president for creating a toxic political environment….”

Statement by Governor Charlie Crist Regarding Filing Deadline for Oil Spill Emergency Claims on Tuesday, November 23, 2010

November 23, 2010 Government Comments Off

“With the deadline to submit a claim for Emergency Advance Payments approaching tomorrow, I encourage all individuals and business owners to quickly finalize and submit their applications. These emergency payments can help Floridians economically hurt by this summer’s oil spill, as well as boost our statewide economy.

“When one part of Florida’s economy is hit hard, our whole state suffers. Few tar balls actually touched our beaches, yet businesses throughout our state have struggled to overcome the false perceptions of oil-tainted sand, water and seafood. Their struggles prove that we cannot underestimate the importance of Florida’s beautiful beaches and Gulf waters to our economic vitality and quality of life.
