Statement By Senate President Mike Haridopolos On Major Ethics Bill Unveiled In Rules Committee
TALLAHASSEE – Senate President Mike Haridopolos made the following statement upon the Senate Rules Committee moving forward with major ethics reform:
I thank Chairman John Thrasher and the Senate Rules Committee for moving forward with a bill that embraces significant ethics reform this legislative session. The bill is a combination of thoughtful proposals by Senators Diaz de la Portilla, Dockery and Fasano. It also includes my recommended changes to the way elected officials’ annual financial disclosure forms are reviewed by the Florida Ethics Commission.
This legislation addresses concerns and makes changes to laws that were recommended by a Statewide Grand Jury late last year. As elected officials, we all have a responsibility to maintain the highest standards as we conduct the business of the State of Florida. Floridians need to know that we have been elected to represent them and not ourselves. This legislation goes a long way in putting additional safeguards in place to protect the public’s trust.
