Commissioner Putnam and DACS to Dedicate Luraville Locamotive Depot and Historic Marker
Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS), along with the Florida Department of State and the Society of American Foresters, will dedicate the Luraville locomotive depot and historic marker tomorrow.
The depot, constructed by the Florida Forest Service with wood from the Blackwater River State Forest will house the early 1850s train engine, which is named in honor of the hometown of James Lancaster, who led the team that retrieved the engine from the Suwannee River in 1979. The engine, one of the oldest relics of steam locomotives in the nation, was presented to DACS in 1982 for safekeeping and preservation by Jack and Peggy Goyke of Jacksonville.
