Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam will officially open the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Fresh For Florida Kids Garden in a ceremony Monday.

The department will grow a variety of in-season Florida commodities in the garden. The garden was designed in the shape of a plate – a nod to the USDA’s new image for the five food groups, My Plate.

Research shows that children who participate in gardening are more likely to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, an important component of a healthy diet. With this in mind, the department will use the garden to teach students about Florida’s growing seasons and the importance of incorporating Fresh From Florida fruits and vegetables into their meals, alternating what is grown with Florida’s growing seasons.
