ACLU to Issue Report Card on School Districts’ Use of Social Security Numbers for Enrollment
CENTRAL FLORIDA DISTRICTS RECEIVE TWO “F” AND ONE “D” GRADES
CONTACT: ACLU of Florida Media Office, (786) 363-2737, media@aclufl.org
Despite court rulings that social security numbers are not required for public school enrollment, many Florida school districts are requesting them on enrollment forms without making clear to families that the information is optional.
Including social security numbers on admission forms, and implying they may be required, can intimidate immigrant families who may not be documented or have reason to worry about a review of their residency status.
The ACLU of Florida requested and reviewed enrollment forms and procedures for all Florida school districts and will issue a state report card on the findings.
The press conference will take place at:
10:30 a.m.
Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012
HOPE CommUnity Center
1016 N. Park Avenue
Apopka, FL 32712
