PSC Continues Renewable Energy Growth with Power Purchase Contract Approval

TALLAHASSEE – Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) today approved a Florida Public Utilities Company (FPUC) petition to purchase renewable energy from Rayonier Performance Fibers, LLC (Rayonier) beginning September 30.

Rayonier owns and operates mills that produce cellulose products from wood chips and uses the steam created by the process to mitigate its electric demand. Under the approved 10-year contract, Rayonier will sell FPUC at least 1.7 megawatts of excess energy generated at its Fernandina Beach biomass facility.

“By purchasing renewable energy, FPUC is enhancing its system reliability, encouraging use of renewable fuels, and promoting Florida’s fuel diversity,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé.

Through 2022, the contract is expected to save FPUC customers $1.27 million and provide enough energy to power approximately 1,200 homes.

In reviewing FPUC’s petition, the Commission considered the utility’s power needs and the contract’s cost effectiveness, security provisions, and performance guarantees. If Rayonier fails to meet its agreement, contract requirements effectively ensure customers are protected.
