Florida Medical Association Installs Vincent DeGennaro, M.D., as 136th FMA President

BOCA RATON – The Florida Medical Association installed Miami VA Healthcare System Chief of Staff Vincent A. DeGennaro, M.D., as its 136th President this evening during the 2012 FMA Annual Meeting in Boca Raton.

Dr. DeGennaro is recognized as a dedicated surgeon and a humanitarian who regularly travels to Haiti’s impoverished central plateau to provide residents with badly needed surgical care. When a devastating earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, Dr. DeGennaro spearheaded the FMA Foundation’s “Help for Haiti” initiative to provide medical supplies and relief. For his service to the medical profession and the public, he received the FMA’s Certificate of Merit, which is the organization’s highest honor.

“Dr. DeGennaro is an inspiration to our members, and he is committed to the FMA’s mission of helping physicians practice medicine,” said FMA Executive Vice President Timothy J. Stapleton. “We look forward to his able leadership as we navigate the major challenges that lie ahead for medicine.”

Dr. DeGennaro received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine, completed his residency in Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center of New York, and completed a fellowship in Colon and Rectal Surgery at Lahey clinic in Boston. He earned a Master of Science Degree in Health Management from the New York University Graduate School for Public Administration.

In addition to his FMA service, Dr. DeGennaro is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Past President of the Broward County Medical Association, and a member of the Board of Directors of Project Medishare for Haiti. Dr. DeGennaro succeeds Miguel A. Machado, M.D., who served as FMA President from 2011-2012.

Other FMA officers are: Alan Harmon, M.D., President-Elect; Ralph Nobo, M.D., Vice President; Alan Pillersdorf, M.D., Secretary; Ron Giffler, M.D., Treasurer; David Becker, M.D., Speaker; and Corey Howard, M.D., Vice Speaker.
