SOBEL CONDEMNS SIKH KILLINGS CALLS ON GOVERNOR TO CONVENE HATE CRIMES TASK FORCE
Hollywood, Florida – In the wake of the horrific religious-based murders in Wisconsin, State Senator Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood) is calling for a complete review of Florida’s hate crimes law. In a letter sent August 15th, 2012, the Senator is asking Governor Rick Scott to form a task force to perform a complete examination of the state’s laws and policies to ensure that we, as a state government, are doing everything possible to prevent a tragedy similar to the recent killings.
“Florida represents a diversity of ethnicities and religious beliefs and we should be doing everything we can to ensure that such a despicable event does not occur here,” stated Sobel. “We have the third largest number of active hate groups in the nation and I want us to begin this process by taking this first step.”
Sobel is calling on the Governor to assemble a task force for the primary purpose of providing a comprehensive review of state law – not to enact any policy changes at this time.
“I want a task force that will be both highly engaged and knowledgeable of the current state of our laws as well as representative of possible victims groups,” she added.
Sobel called for the task force to be made up of key representatives from FDLE, the State Supreme Court, the State Legislature, the Attorney General as well as private representatives who are engaged with understanding hate groups and their activities.
The last time such a task force was convened may have been as long ago as 1995, she noted.
