Potential for severe weather today

August 17, 2012 Government No Comments

From Tallahassee Weather:

A cluster of showers and thunderstorms are diminishing across Southwestern Alabama. A boundary (noted by the blue lines) is moving southward toward the Gulf Coast and will reach the Gulf of Mexico by midday. As this outflow boundary nears the coast, it will collide with the developing daily sea breeze front and likely lead to rapid development of showers and thunderstorms across the Florida Panhandle. Once these storms develop, they are anticipated to spread eastward across the Florida Panhandle and possibly move into Southeastern Alabama and far Southwestern Georgia. Some of these storms could quickly become strong to severe this afternoon. The probability for severe weather today is around 15 percent. This value is a little higher than what is typically seen during the summer months, indicative of more storms reaching severe limits within the area.

Impacts: The primary impacts with these storms today will be the potential for damaging winds up to 60 mph with could uproot trees and cause minor damage to sheds and outbuildings. Hail up to quarter size is less likely concern today but still possible. Heavy rainfall will be possible with these storms, but the flooding threat appears low as storms are expected to move at speeds of 20 to 30 mph, thus lessening storm total rainfall amounts.

Timing: Storms are expected to begin developing around 12 pm in the Western Florida Panhandle and then spread eastward with time, nearing the Dothan and Panama City areas between 1 pm and 3 pm CT and moving further eastward impacting the Tallahassee and Albany areas between 3 pm and 5 pm ET.

Summary: ** Severe weather is anticipated later this afternoon across the region. ** The primary threat with this system will be damaging winds. ** Hail up to quarter size is possible, but not the primary threat. ** Locally heavy rainfall is possible for brief periods, but storms are expected to move quick enough today to keep the flood threat low.
