Tova Wang on today’s court ruling on Florida election law

August 17, 2012 Government No Comments

Pasted below is a statement from Tova Andrea Wang, fellow at The Century Foundation, regarding today’s court ruling on Florida’s election law changes.

Tova Andrea Wang http://tcf.org/about/fellows/tova-andrea-wang, The Century Foundation’s Democracy Fellow, is a nationally known expert on election reform and political participation and is also a fellow at Demos. She is the author of a book being released this month: The Politics of Voters Suppression. Defending and Expanding Americans’ Right to Vote.

*Tova Wang*:

*”Because voting rights are under unprecedented attack in Florida and around the country, voters, voting rights groups and the Department of Justice have had to step in to try to block the measures passed by state legislators who think they can win profit politically by restricting the right to vote.*

* *

*”It is a sad time in our nation’s history when we have to once again resort to the justice system to ensure the right to vote as has been too often the case in our country’s past.*

* *

*”The ruling on the Florida law is good news for the voters in the five affected counties but the fight continues throughout the country. Hopefully this ruling will send a message to leaders in other states that limiting voting rights and access to the ballot box, especially in ways that are discriminatory, cannot stand.”*
