DEO TEAMS UP WITH FLORIDA’S WORKFORCE PARTNERS TO PROVIDE REEMPLOYMENT SERVICES TO LAID OFF AMERICAN AIRLINES EMPLOYEES
DEO is coordinating with Workforce Florida, Inc. and the local regional workforce boards to develop a plan to help affected employees

TALLAHASSEE— The Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) is coordinating with Workforce Florida, Inc. Workforce One and the South Florida Workforce Investment Board to assist those American Airlines employees being laid off in Miami and Fort Lauderdale. More than 1,400 employees could potentially be impacted.

“Under Governor Rick Scott’s direction, DEO, Workforce Florida Inc., Workforce One, the South Florida Workforce Investment Board and other local organizations are working together to help transition impacted employees into other jobs as quickly as possible,” said DEO Executive Director Hunting F. Deutsch.

The South Florida Workforce Investment Board provides employment assistance and job training services for Miami-Dade County and Workforce One provides them for Broward County. Locally, the South Florida Workforce Investment Board is setting up a temporary reemployment center at the Miami Free Zone with staff and resources available to provide employment and training information through the region’s many one-stop career centers, including:

· Working with both Management and Labor representatives to provide a targeted strategy for addressing the needs of affected employees;
· Job search, job placement assistance, Reemployment Assistance and useful labor market information
· Career counseling, development of a personal employment plan, workshops on interviewing and resume preparation and occupational training linked to local job opportunities; and
· General information on community services that can help meet immediate needs of affected employees and their families.

Additionally, the state will look into federal grants available for providing employment and training assistance.

“We want to ensure workers affected by the American Airlines layoffs know there are workforce services and resources available in their communities and online to support their search for new employment,” said Workforce Florida President/CEO Chris Hart IV. “Connecting these workers with new employment or training opportunities to enhance their prospect for finding a new job is a top priority.”

American Airlines’ WARN Notice said the company expects to lay off 47 employees at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and 158 employees at Miami International Airport (MIA) around Nov. 16, and another 1,209 workers at MIA around Dec. 16.

Impacted residents in Miami-Dade County looking for reemployment assistance can contact the South Florida Workforce Investment Board at 305-594-7615 or www.southfloridaworkforce.com. Residents in Broward can contact Workforce One at 954-677-5555 or www.wf1broward.com. Employers interested in hiring these impacted workers can call 954-677-JOBS. Additionally, all job seekers are encouraged to register with Employ Florida Marketplace, www.employflorida.com, the state’s one-stop online resource for job training, career opportunities, career building assistance and more.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity combines the state’s economic, workforce and community development efforts. This new approach helps expedite economic development projects to fuel job creation in competitive communities.
