Employer Recognition Celebration to be Held in Daytona Beach
DAYTONA BEACH—A special event on Wednesday, October 17, will give
employers valuable information about hiring workers with disabilities. The
Employer Recognition Celebration also will recognize the contributions of
businesses who actively hire, mentor, and support persons with disabilities
so they can gain valuable work experience and secure employment in our
communities. Employers and human resource professionals are invited to
attend the event, which will be held in observance of Disability Employment
Awareness Month. The celebration will be held from 7:30 until 9 a.m. at
the Mori Hosseini Center, Daytona State College, 1200 W. International
Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114.
The event is sponsored by the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD),
Volusia County Transition Team, and partner agencies. Several interesting
topics will be explored during the celebration, including low-cost and
no-cost workplace accommodations. Rod Samra, compliance officer, U.S.
Department of Labor, will share helpful tips with employers on how to
comply with disability-related employment laws. Mike Mitchner, general
manager of the local Sam’s Club, will speak on dispelling the myths about
hiring individuals with disabilities. A panel discussion will be held
between mentors from the business community and mentees with disabilities
who are looking for gainful employment. A complementary continental
breakfast will be provided by Daytona State College.
