Miami woman arrest for $3 million extortion attempt
Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Miami Regional Operations Center today arrested Camille Brown, 31, of Plantation, Fla., for one count of extortion.
The investigation began in September 2012, when FDLE was contacted by a representative of the Rowland Schaefer family regarding an email they had received, in which Brown claimed she had derogatory information about the family. Brown threatened she would release the information to the highest bidding media outlet unless the family paid her $3 million.
Undercover FDLE agents, acting as representatives of the Rowland Schaefer family, made contact with the defendant where she claimed she had derogatory and embarrassing documents and she would release them to the media unless she was paid $3 million. The agents agreed to the extortion demands and agreed to meet Brown Oct. 9 to discuss payment transfers. Brown was arrested this afternoon in Boynton Beach after that meeting.
Brown is the daughter of a former housekeeper for the Schaefer family.
Brown was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail.
