Consumer Energy Alliance Proposes “New Energy Future”
With 10 Steps to Energy Self-Sufficiency by 2020
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A new report by the Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) concludes that North America can achieve energy self-sufficiency by the year 2020 by fully utilizing its abundant natural resources. For this to happen, America must embrace an “all-of-the-above” energy policy and states like Florida must have the tools to implement that policy, said CEA-Florida Executive Director Kevin Doyle.
The report on “The New Energy Future” concludes that North America can nearly meet its energy demand by 2020 and fully compete in the global energy marketplace on par with other petroleum producing nations. The report lays out 10 steps to reach this goal, ranging from establishment of a coherent national energy policy to expanded investment in alternative and renewable energy sources.
“More and more, Florida’s policy leaders are recognizing the importance to the state’s future of harnessing both traditional and alternative sources of energy,” Doyle said. “Our state and nation – in fact, all of North America – appear to be on a trajectory toward energy self-sufficiency, but the wrong policies could derail this opportunity. We must pursue policies that open up more domestic resources so we can have true energy self-reliance.”
Almost all of Florida’s gasoline supply is imported and 55 percent of the state’s electricity needs are met by natural gas – all of which is currently imported from out of state. Florida has tremendous biomass resources onshore and substantial oil and gas potential offshore. The keys for Florida and our country are policies that support affordable, reliable, and diversified energy supplies, Doyle said.
In addition to alternative energy production from wind, solar, geothermal and biomass, vast untapped supplies of oil and natural gas lie beneath America. Despite this fact, the nation is not currently doing all it can to tap into this abundant, affordable and domestic resource. Recent developments in hydraulic fracturing and directional drilling have greatly enhanced the nation’s ability to safely tap into this resource, but current government policies are limiting the full potential of this development.
In its report, CEA notes that since the recession began, the oil and natural gas industry has grown by more than 86,000 jobs nationally and accounted for 9 percent of new employment in 2011 alone. During the same period, the economy as a whole has lost 5 million jobs.
CEA’s 10-step plan to lead to energy self-sufficiency includes, among other things:
Create and enact a coherent National Energy Policy
Promote energy efficiency and sustainable practices
Continue development of a diverse energy portfolio, including expanded investment in alternative and renewable energy sources and transmission infrastructure
Ensure that regulations are equitable, consistent, scientifically based and non-duplicative
Recognize the importance of Canadian energy production to North American energy self-sufficiency and prevent regulations that discriminate against it.
The Consumer Energy Alliance is committed to reducing the nation’s reliance on imported energy, maintaining reasonable energy prices for consumers, and properly balancing America’s energy needs with environmental and conservation goals.
“Substantial investment in the development of oil and natural gas has buoyed the economy, helping to support millions of jobs, generate billions of dollars in government revenue, and, most significantly, supply millions of consumers with affordable energy,” the CEA report says. “Technology will play a leading role in boosting domestic supplies. But the real variable in it all is public policy.”
