Rep. Perry Thurston: Florida Needs a Strategic Plan
That Puts Public School Students Ahead of Private Interests

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston (D-Plantation) issued the following statement regarding a Strategic Plan for the public schools offered this week by the state Board of Education.

“Florida needs a strategic vision for our schools that puts public education first. Students, parents and educators deserve a plan centered around Florida’s constitutional guarantee of a high-quality system of free public schools, and not just another attempt to privatize fundamental responsibilities.

“An appropriate vision should focus on improving student performance across the board instead of one based on race and ethnicity. It is inappropriate to suggest, as the Board of Education has implied, that one race is academically inferior to another.

“The state Board of Education has failed in its first attempt at a strategic five-year plan. I urge the Board to reconsider the plan it adopted on Tuesday and rewrite one that puts public school students ahead of private interests.”
