DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TAKES ACTION AGAINST UNLICENSED HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONERS
~DOH issues cease and desist orders for the unlicensed sale of contact lenses~
TALLAHASSEE- The Florida Department of Health (DOH) today issued eight cease and desist orders for the unlicensed practice of opticianry. In response to information regarding the sale of cosmetic, decorative lenses by unlicensed opticians, the DOH Investigative Services Unit conducted a statewide operation to identify establishments selling contact lenses.
The statewide operation resulted in the issuance of eight cease and desist notices, as well as 12 citations resulting in at least a $500 fine per violation.
The Department’s concern, particularly around the Halloween season, is the public purchasing of contact lenses as a costume accessory from unlicensed optical establishments. When sold by an unlicensed person, contact lenses may not be properly fitted, and the contact user may not be educated regarding proper use. An uninformed contact user with ill-fitting contact lenses may develop significant eye injury with lifelong consequences for vision.
The operation involved retailers including beauty suppliers, convenience stores and costume stores. The facilities involved in today’s actions are as follows:
Zidal Food Store, 9195 103rd Street, Jacksonville
Monarch Beauty, 3764 Blanding Blvd., Jacksonville
Super Beauty Max, 750 Cassat Ave., Jacksonville
Cell Touch Metro, 997 E Memorial Blvd, Lakeland
Shake-N-Go, 840 E Memorial Blvd., Lakeland
People’s Beauty, 9281 56th St.
DJ’s Beauty, 8211 N Florida Avenue, Tampa
Beauty and Beyond, 2002 E Fletcher Avenue, Tampa
Christefano Beauty Supply, 4645 Gun Club Road, Suite 15, West Palm Beach
Fabulous Beauty Supply, 4356 Okeechobee Blvd., West Palm Beach
Vera Beauty Supply, 2695 N. Military Trail, West Palm Beach
Unique Beauty Supply, 5335 N. Military Trail, West Palm Beach
These retailers may no longer sell these accessories and will be assessed at least $500 per violation. Please report any suspected unlicensed activity to the Department at 1-877-425-8852 or visit www.FLHealthSource.com.
