Governor Scott highlights improved job climate for Florida Guardsmen
~ Unemployment for Florida Guardsmen Reduced by 8.2 Percentage Points ~
Tallahassee, Fla. (October 24, 2012) – In Tuesday’s meeting of the Governor
and the Cabinet, Governor Rick Scott recognized the progress made recently to
lower the unemployment levels among Florida National Guardsmen from 15
percent in September 2011, to 6.8 percent in September 2012 – a more than 8
percentage point decrease.
Governor Scott said, “This is great news for the men and women who serve our
state with honor and distinction. One year ago, many more Guardsmen were
facing unemployment. We’ve managed to reduce the unemployment rate for
Guardsmen by over 8 percentage points.”
The news comes on the heels of last week’s announcement that Florida’s
unemployment has decreased over 22 consecutive months, and that 156,800
private sector jobs have been created since December 2010.
“Our success is a testament to the collaboration and cooperation of many
people working together to get our Guardsmen back into the workforce,” said
Maj. Gen. Emmett R. Titshaw Jr., The Adjutant General of Florida. “I’m
grateful for the support we’ve had from our state and federal partners and
especially from the military-friendly employers across the state who continue
to recognize that our veterans and service members make great employees.”
At the Cabinet meeting, Governor Scott applauded the success of the Florida
Guard Family Career Connection, a collaborative effort of the State of
Florida and federal partners to provide transition services and job
opportunities for Soldiers and Airmen. Today, nearly 12,000 Guardsmen reside
in Florida, including 2,000 full-time (active guard and federal technician)
and 10,000 traditional Guardsmen.
