MIAMI-DADE SUPERINTENDENT NAMED FLORIDA’S DISTRICT DATA LEADER OF THE YEAR

Tallahassee, Fla., October 26, 2012 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today named Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho as the 2012 District Data Leader of the Year. Carvalho was honored for making data-driven decisions to motivate students, narrow achievement gaps, boost parental involvement, and increase the district’s effectiveness in using limited financial resources. The commissioner presented the award at a special awards ceremony and luncheon in Tallahassee sponsored by Microsoft, Kyra InfoTech, and MetaMetrics.

“My sincere congratulations to Superintendent Carvalho for using data to make decisions for his district that result in better student achievement,” said Commissioner Stewart. “I applaud his use of data to enrich the academic environment and inspire students to perform at higher levels.”

Among Superintendent Carvalho’s key accomplishments is implementing the Data Assessment and Technical Assistance/Coordination of Management process. This system monitors immediate operational needs for the district’s most struggling schools and then allocates resources to resolve critical issues efficiently. And, Superintendent Carvalho’s commitment to using data to improve academic achievement helped Miami-Dade students outperform national peers on the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress Reading, Mathematics, and Science assessments.

The District Data Leader of the Year Award recognizes school leaders who consistently strive to implement new methods that improve the use of data in their communities and schools. By using innovative data strategies, they increase educator effectiveness and reach higher levels of student achievement. Previous winners include Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Mary Ellen Elia and Putnam County Public Schools Superintendent Tom Townsend.
