DCF Renegotiates Contracts at State Hospitals to Save Nearly $4 Million, Serve More Individuals
Contracts renewed at four GEOCare facilities for civil and criminal commitments

TALLAHASSEE— The Department of Children and Families has renegotiated four contracts with GeoCare Inc. at state mental health treatment facilities that treat individuals who have been civilly or criminally committed.

The new contract terms will save $3.6 million over two years and increase the number of beds available by 16. The contracts were each renewed for five years, which will result in future savings as well.

“Our goal is always to save taxpayer dollars while efficiently serving the people who are in need of treatment,” said Secretary David Wilkins. “In our Substance Abuse and Mental Health program area, we have been able to reduce costs by millions of dollars through various initiatives and increase the number of people receiving our services.”

GEOCare, a private residential treatment company, administers all services at South Florida State Hospital, Treasure Coast Forensic Treatment Center, South Florida Evaluation & Treatment Center, and the Florida Civil Commitment Center.

South Florida State Hospital is a 341-bed mental health/psychiatric facility in Hollywood. Treasure Coast Forensic Center is a maximum security 198-bed forensic mental health treatment facility in Martin County that houses men who are charged with felonies and found incompetent to proceed or not guilty by reason of insanity.

South Florida Evaluation & Treatment Center is a licensed forensic hospital in Florida City with capacity to serve 238 individuals, including 56 females, in a maximum-security setting. The Florida Civil Commitment Center is a 720-facility in Arcadia for men committed under the state’s Sexually Violent Predator Act, which allows involuntary commitment of sexually violent predators who have completed their sentences but are found to be at high risk of re-offense.
