PSC Encourages Volunteering for ‘Day of Utility Service’

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will join public utility commissions throughout the country in recognizing the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday, January 21, as a national “Day of Utility Service.”

“Dr. King believed that serving others is our greatest responsibility. Florida’s PSC embraced that volunteer spirit by recently participating in a local Habitat for Humanity build along with utility commissions nationwide to honor Dr. King’s birthday,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé. “Through its dedicated volunteers, Habitat builds energy-efficient homes…and also builds communities and hope.”

Chairman Brisé added, “For this year’s ‘Day of Utility Service,’ I encourage you to volunteer to help others conserve energy through weatherization, conservation, and other energy management projects. If you can’t volunteer, you can still conserve energy in your own home by using energy-efficient light bulbs or having an energy audit. All conservation efforts help Florida’s energy future.”

Energy conservation brochures are available on the PSC website at: http://www.psc.state.fl.us/publications/consumer/brochures.aspx.

This is the fifth anniversary of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners’ (NARUC) “Day of Utility Service,” commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For the second consecutive year, NARUC is supporting Habitat for Humanity, since Habitat branches nationwide help eligible families receive affordable, energy efficient homes. Helping Habitat weatherize a home will permanently reduce energy bills for a low-income family.

Utility commissioners nationwide continue to promote energy efficiency as a way to set reasonable rates for all customers. If you’re interested in learning more about Habitat’s mission, please visit: http://www.habitat.org/default.aspx.
