SEN. SIMPSON FILES FLORIDA SMALL CITIES COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT ACT

Tallahassee, Fla. — Today, Senator Wilton Simpson (R-Trilby), Chairman of the Senate Community Affairs Committee filed Senate Bill 494, the Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Act.

“The existing CDBG Act contains a number of provisions that restrict the program’s ability to be flexible. This legislation will give the Department of Economic Opportunity the latitude necessary to make the program more effective, increase economic development outcomes and remove burdensome and unnecessary requirements,” said Senator Simpson.

“Once this legislation is approved, DEO will be able to more easily help local communities secure grants for an expanded economic development toolkit, including entrepreneurial training, micro enterprise loans, and business incubators,” said DEO Director Jesse Panuccio. “We look forward to making this process more transparent, accountable, and efficient for communities in Florida.”
