GOVERNOR INCLUDES $7.5 MILLION FOR MONITORING DEVICES FOR WORK RELEASE INMATES IN BUDGET
Clearwater, Florida – Senator Jack Latvala (R-Clearwater) today commended Governor Scott for including over $7.5 million in his budget to purchase electronic monitoring devices for inmates at work release locations around the state. This was in response to the investigation of the Residential Re-Entry Center on US 19 and subsequent report by the Florida Department of Corrections (DC) which was initiated by Senator Latvala. Inmates in this program have been accused of serious crimes.
After a complete and immediate review of the facility and the inmates, the report indicated the need to correct significant lapses in security. “Monitoring devices for these inmates will help to make neighboring communities feel safer,” said Senator Latvala. “I commend the Governor for adding this to the budget. It will be money well-spent. This is a good start at alleviating the concerns of residents in Largo and other places around the state where these facilities are located.”
Razor wire, more cameras, and better monitoring at job sites are recommended and will add to the security. Additional lighting is scheduled to be completed by February 1st.
