Statement by Rep. Jim Boyd on the Ethics and Elections Subcommittee’s Passage of Election Reform

Tallahassee, Fla.—State Representative Jim Boyd (R-Bradenton), Chair of the Ethics and Elections Subcommittee, today released the following statement regarding the committee’s passage of a proposed committee bill on election reform (PCB EES 13-01):

“One of the most important jobs for the Florida Legislature this year will be to ensure that our citizens have the ability to participate in more efficient, accessible, and transparent elections. I commend my colleagues on the subcommittee for diligently working together to investigate the problems that occurred during the 2012 election and determine the necessary steps to take to prevent the problems from occurring again in future elections.

“Election reform is an ongoing issue. After each election it is important to look at what worked and what didn’t, and make the appropriate improvements. Based on the reports this committee received from Supervisors of Elections and the Secretary of State, this bill seeks to provide counties with more flexibility so that they may better serve their voters and run more efficient elections.

“While no election is perfect and it is impossible to predict all future problems, today’s passage of this bill is the first step toward helping ensure Florida voters have ample opportunity to cast a ballot and participate in fair and efficient elections.”
