Statement from the Florida Department of Health Regarding Trauma Center Verification

February 14, 2013 Government No Comments

(850) 245- 4111

STATEMENT FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH REGARDING TRAUMA CENTER VERIFICATION

The Florida Department of Health today notified Orange Park Medical Center that it did not meet the requirements to be a verified Level II trauma center. The provisional trauma center did not meet the standards for verification, and must cease operating as a provisional trauma center immediately. Acute care hospitals and EMS providers in Trauma Service Area Five have been notified of this disposition.

Verified trauma centers across the state must meet the defined standards for trauma care. The Department of Health remains committed to maintaining those standards on behalf of injured patients.

Specific deficiencies related to DOH Trauma Center Standards at Orange Park Medical Center included emergency department requirements, acute rehabilitative services, psychosocial support systems and quality management.

Shands Jacksonville remains a verified level one trauma center within the Trauma Service Area Five to meet the needs of injured patients in Clay County.

The Florida Department of Health continues to work with trauma professionals, hospitals and communities to develop a trauma system that is inclusive, sustainable, and integrated for safe, effective and efficient care of injured patients in Florida.

DOH protects, promotes and improves the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts.
