PSC Offers February Energy Challenge Tip for 500 kWh Annual Savings
TALLAHASSEE – Throughout Florida’s historic 500th anniversary year, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) will help our state continue its longevity by providing monthly energy conservation tips—the 2013 Energy Saving Challenge. Participating residents can save up to 500 kilowatt hours (kWh) or more of energy through December that will save them money and help protect Florida’s resources for residents and visitors to enjoy for another 500 years.
In January, the PSC Challenge began by encouraging consumers to get a free home energy audit and use compact fluorescent bulbs. After your home energy audit, there may literally be a houseful of energy saving changes available. The PSC Energy Saving Challenge will help you improve one area at a time.
Your February energy challenge addresses your home’s heating and cooling system, comprising about 50 percent of your utility bill. You can save money and increase your comfort by properly maintaining your equipment. This, combined with recommended thermostat settings, can significantly cut your heating and cooling energy use—and reduce environmental emissions.
“Saving 500 kWh of energy annually will have lasting impacts for residents who make conservation habits a way of life and for the state resources that are preserved,” PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé said. “The more residents who commit to follow our 2013 Energy Saving Challenge, the more energy will be saved this year and for years to come.”
Hands-on tips include:
· Set your thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter–usually 68 degrees–and as high as is comfortable in the summer–usually 78 degrees, as well as when you’re sleeping or away from home.
· Clean or replace filters on furnaces and air conditioners once a month.
· Clean air registers and make sure they’re not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or drapes.
