Statement by Rep. Alan Williams (House Democratic Whip) on the House Appropriations Committee’s Passage of Elections Bill

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – State Rep. Alan Williams (D-Tallahassee) today released the following statement regarding the House Appropriations Committee’s approval of an election bill that incorporates several recommendations of House Democratic Caucus members:

“Florida needs more voting days, more polling locations, and for those voting sites to be properly staffed and equipped. Today, I am pleased that the House moved a step closer, and in bipartisan fashion, toward improving Floridians’ ability to exercise their right to vote. I am particularly pleased to be the sponsor of a successfully approved amendment to House Bill 7013 to expand early voting hours in Florida.

“To combat the long lines that plagued Florida’s 2012 elections, I was pleased to present the amendment that would allow 14 days of early voting, with a maximum of 168 hours of voting, while also allowing flexibility to elections supervisors by allowing them to offer no fewer than 64 hours of early voting.

“I believe that these and other changes to the election law will do a great deal to help Florida voters cast a ballot and participate in fair and efficient elections.”
