Sumter County – Motorists relying on either the northbound or southbound rest areas along I-75 near the border of Hernando County should be prepared for fully or partially closed facilities starting Monday, September 23.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) along with contractor Enpower Construction, are scheduled to mill and resurface the Sumter County Rest Area located between exits 301 and 309. The entrance and exit ramps, parking lots, picnic sections and sidewalks are all scheduled for improvement.
FDOT rest area closure restrictions limit the contractor to ten planned 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. shifts at various scheduled days. Outside those scheduled shifts work will take place on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the 60-day contract. Full closure of facilities will only take place during the resurfacing of the entrance and exit ramps (at night). Other restrictions apply to the parking areas with varying work hours. No work will be scheduled on Fridays from 6 a.m. to Sundays 7 p.m.
Roadside message boards will alert the traveling public of specific rest area closures. Information will also be posted to www.cflroads.com.
The project is estimated to be completed at the end of October. Total cost for the project is $667,412.00.
Weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances could alter work schedules.
The Florida Department of Transportation strives for safe construction zones. Travelers should be alert for construction personnel and equipment along the project corridor.
All vehicle occupants should buckle up. Safety belts save lives.
