PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. – Joined by Assistant Adjutant General-Army, Florida National Guard, Brigadier General Michael Calhoun, Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Colonel Mike Prendergast, Governor Rick Scott on Friday awarded 140 Florida veterans with the Governor’s Veterans Service Award for their service to Florida and the nation.
Governor Scott said, “Our veterans are heroes that have made countless sacrifices for Florida families. It’s important that we don’t just wait for the holidays to thank our men and women. We must frequently honor them for their courage and service to our nation. We will forever be indebted to our veterans, and this medal is a testament of our thanks.”
The ceremony was held at the Alexander “Sandy” Nininger State Veterans’ Nursing Home in Pembroke Pines, one of six veterans’ nursing homes in the state. During the ceremony, Governor Scott highlighted the service of Florida veteran, Sergeant Sidney Goldenberg.
Sergeant Sandy Goldenberg
Sergeant Goldenberg enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corporation in 1943.Upon deployment, he was stationed in England where he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant and was assigned as a Flight Maintenance Gunner. There, he flew and completed 24 bombing missions during the European offensive by the Allied forces. On his 25th mission, Sergeant Goldenberg was shot down, captured by Germans and held as a prisoner of war for 437 days. He eventually escaped, was rescued by the Russian Army and returned to the US armed forces where he remained until September of 1945.
During Goldenberg’s time serving in the armed forces, he received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star, an Air medal with three oak leaf clusters and a Gold Conduct medal.
Florida Veterans Medal
The “Governor’s Veterans Service Award” honors Floridians who have served in the U.S. Military. The front of the medal depicts the Great Seal of the State of Florida. The back of the medal displays the five seals representing the five branches of U.S. Military with an inscription that reads “Honoring Those Who Served.”
