TALLAHASSEE, FL— Florida State Senator Jeff Clemens (D-Lake Worth) is looking to stop or slow down the proliferation of unwanted text messages Floridians receive.
Senate Bill 450 will expand the “no sales solicitation calls” list maintained by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to include voice, text, or electronic communication through a landline, mobile, or internet telephone service.
“People don’t want their personal and business correspondence cluttered up with unwanted text advertisements,” Clemens said. “It makes perfect sense to extend these privacies to newer forms of communication.”
With the creation of Do Not Call lists across the nation, consumers continue to be bombarded by solicitors using electronic communications, such as email and mobile text messaging. The Legislature intended to protect consumers from unsolicited sales communication, and phone calls in particular. If SB 450 passes, the law would extend those protections to deal with a changing communications environment.
