(North Miami Beach, FL)—— Two of the most revered religious leaders in South Florida, Rabbi Alan E. Litwak from Temple Sinai of North Dade in North Miami Beach and Bishop Victor Curry of the New Birth Baptist Church in Miami will bring their congregations together for a powerful interfaith service to honor the memory and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Friday, January 17 at Temple Sinai.

Temple Sinai’s Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Shabbat Service is free and open to the public. It is being organized to remind congregants and the community of the historic and ongoing bonds between Jews and African-Americans and will be an extraordinary evening of prayer and song.

Since 2008, Rabbi Litwak and Bishop Curry have worked together on similar services. They seek to inspire their congregations and raise awareness of the historical bonds between the faiths and create a thought provoking Shabbat service.

A highlight of the evening will be the merging of New Birth Baptist Church’s powerful and phenomenal choir with that of Temple Sinai’s. Both choirs will raise their voices to the heavens in celebration of continued bonds of faith.

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Shabbat Service was inspired in part from an event in 1965, when Dr. King and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, along with other religious and civic leaders, walked arm and arm at the forefront of the human rights movement through a period of civil unrest throughout the U.S.

“Power is the theme that I rejoice on; nothing works without it. Both in the natural and the spiritual realms we need power and this event is time to celebrate that ability of humanity,” said Bishop Curry.

“The African-American and Jewish communities share similar histories and Dr. King’s birthday is a great time to remind us of his message of justice, equality and peace,” said Rabbi Litwak.
