TAMPA – With the holiday season in full swing, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the many family gatherings, office parties and countless celebrations that fill the calendar this time of year. One thing that can be avoided, though, is getting behind the wheel after a night of drinking .

You could end up in jail – or worse.

As a safe and fun alternative to drinking around the holidays, the Florida Department of Transportation’s Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) has put together its 10th annual “Recipes for the Road,” a collection of non-alcoholic drinks from 16 locally owned restaurants in the Tampa Bay Area.

The great thing about “Recipes for the Road” is that it isn’t just for the holiday season. As in year’s past, the 2014 edition contains many fantastic and delicious non-alcoholic drink ideas for many other holidays and events, including:  Super Bowl, Gasparilla, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Fourth of July, Halloween and even Thanksgiving.

In addition to the 40 non-alcoholic drink alternatives, “Recipes for the Road” also includes personal stories from those who have lost loved ones due to impaired driving. “The Department is committed to putting safety first,” said Paul Steinman, FDOT District 7 Secretary. “As you read some of the stories featured in the booklet of those whose lives have been impacted by a driver under the influence, you can readily see how your life can change in an instant.”

The main goal of “Recipes for the Road” is to reduce crashes and fatalities on the roadways not only during the holiday season, but all year long.  The theme is always oriented towards the importance of serving non-alcoholic beverages for those designated drivers who will provide a safe ride home. Last year, in District 7 alone, which includes Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Citrus counties, there were 140 DUI related deaths. Check out the interactive “Recipes for the Road 2014” booklet for more information.
