WHEN IT COMES TO 2014 LEGISLATIVE SESSION, A TALE OF TWO AGENDAS

As the 2014 Legislative Session opens tomorrow, the differences between the legislative agendas of House Republicans and Democrats could not be clearer.

STATEMENT FROM RPOF CHAIRMAN LENNY CURRY: “The difference between the Republican and Democrat agendas for Florida is crystal clear. Under Republican leadership, Florida has seen a dramatic turnaround in unemployment and the creation of over 462,000 new private-sector jobs. The Republican agenda this year will build on that success by providing Florida families with more educational opportunities for their children, enacting the largest amount of tax relief in a decade, working to keep our kids and seniors safe, and making Florida the most military-friendly state in the country. Unfortunately, the Democrats are advancing an agenda in lockstep with President Obama, whose policies have failed to revitalize America’s economy and whose so-called ‘signature achievement,’ Obamacare, isn’t working. It’s clear that House Republicans are promoting an agenda that will help Florida families, but instead of joining in that effort, House Democrats are more interested in playing the President’s tired and partisan politics.”

HOUSE REPUBLICANS, LED BY SPEAKER WILL WEATHERFORD (R – WESLEY CHAPEL), ARE PROMOTING A BOLD, POSITIVE AGENDA FOR FLORIDA FAMILIES DUBBED WORK PLAN 2014

The Republican Agenda Will:

Expand Economic Opportunity Through Education. House Republicans are dedicated to “increasing the value and accessibility of higher education…expanding education choices for families in poverty … and cementing the link between education and jobs.” (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

  • Florida House Republicans Are Committed To Keeping Tuition Low, Rewarding Good Performance, And Increasing Student Access. By giving every child an equal opportunity to a great education, putting higher education in reach for more families, and ensuring our kids are taught the skills they need to find good jobs, Florida Republicans are committed to continuing the progress we’ve made to improve access and opportunity in education. (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

Make Florida The Most Military-Friendly State In The Country. Florida House Republicans are dedicated to “establishing Florida as the top ‘welcome home’ state for the military, veterans and their families.” (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

  • Florida House Republicans Are Committed To Expanding Educational And Employment Opportunities While Investing In Florida’s Military Infrastructure. By creating the Florida GI Bill, making it easier for veterans to obtain a college degree and start businesses, and waiving out of state tuition for veterans, House Republicans are determined to support those who have served our country honorably. (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

Protect Florida’s Most Vulnerable Citizens From Harm. Florida House Republicans are dedicated to increasing safeguards for Florida’s children and seniors by toughening laws against sexual predators to protect our children, reforming our child welfare system, and increasing transparency and accountability at Assisted Living Facilities to keep our seniors safe. (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

Provide $500 Million In Tax Relief To Floridians – the Largest Tax Cut in a Decade.Florida House Republicans will “reduce the amount of money government takes from Floridians who earn it.” (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

Make Florida’s Government More Efficient And Accountable. Florida House Republicans are dedicated to “achieving reform of the Florida Retirement System and continuing to improve ethics laws.” (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

  • House Republicans Are Committed To Making Government Work Better For All Floridians By Strengthening Public Employees Retirement System, Developing Information Technology Governance Strategy For State Government, And Continuing To Improve Florida’s Ethics Laws. (Press Release, “President Gaetz and Speaker Weatherford Announce Work Plan Florida 2014,” Florida House/Senate Republicans, 1/29/14)

IN CONTRAST, HOUSE DEMOCRATS, LED BY PERRY THURSTON (D – PLANTATION), ARE ADVANCING A PARTISAN, CLASS WARFARE AGENDA THAT EMBRACES THE FAILED POLICIES OF PRESIDENT OBAMA

The Democrats’ Agenda Will:

Reverse The Gains Florida’s Economy Has Made Under Governor Rick Scott And Legislative Republicans. Florida Democrats want to raise taxes on job creators and support President Obama’s proposed minimum wage increase – a move the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office says would eliminate 500,000 jobs. (Susan Davis, “CBO report: Minimum wage hike could cost 500,000 jobs,” USA Today, 2/18/14)

  • Even Democrats In Washington Have Backed Away From Bringing Up A Minimum Wage Increase. “So much for changing the narrative in 2014 from the ObamaCare debacle. Democrats, led by Barack Obama, planned to go on offense over the minimum-wage rate to cast the GOP as heartless. But in his rush to the barricades, Harry Reid belatedly discovered that his caucus didn’t like the fight nearly as much as he and Obama did … The issue, of course, is that the CBO actually scored the proposal before Reid could advance the bill. Their estimate of 500,000 jobs lost in just two years would be a boat anchor on any legislation.” (Ed Morrissey, “Reid stops minimum-wage hike bill after Dems balk,” Hot Air, 2/26/14)

Embrace The Deeply Flawed Obamacare Healthcare Law. Florida Democrats have embraced a law that has cost hundreds of thousands of Floridians their healthcare coverage and raised premiums across the country. (“FL Blue Cancels 300,000 Policies,” Health News Florida, 10/321/13, “ObamaCare may increase premiums for 11 million workers, report says,” Fox News, 2/25/14)

  • According To The Latest New York Times/CBS Poll, Only 6% Of Americans Say Obamacare Is Working Well. (Sara Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Anthony Salvanto and Fred Backus, “Most Americans Disappointed In Obama’s Presidency, Poll Says,” CBS News, 2/26/14)

Oppose Education Reforms That Have Helped Florida Students Succeed. Florida Democrats support eliminating education standards that have a proven track record of success. (“For a Better Florida,” House Democratic Caucus, 2/14)

  • Under Republican Leadership, Florida Schools Have Dramatically Improved. Accountability standards have helped raise the bar for Florida’s students and transformed Florida’s schools from some of the nation’s worst under Democrat leadership in the 1990s to some of the nation’s best under Republican leadership in the 21st Century. (“Florida’s Education Revolution,” Foundation for Excellence in Education)

Florida Democrats Fail To Understand The Importance Of Fiscal Responsibility.Rather than be responsible with the people’s money and continue to pay down debt and save money for a rainy day, Florida Democrats propose spending hundreds of millions of dollars on various projects. (“For a Better Florida,” House Democratic Caucus, 2/14)

  • House Minority Leader Perry Thurston Is So Blinded By Politics That He Won’t Even Admit There Is A Budget Surplus. “‘ In my mind, there is no budget surplus,’ Rep. Perry Thurston, the House minority leader, said at a news conference.” (Bill Cotterell, “House Democrats Say Session Will Be ‘Class Warfare’,” The Florida Current, 2/20/14)
