WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland, II issued the following statement today slamming the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s decision to shorten the Gulf of Mexico’s red snapper season from 40 days to 9 days:

“Today’s decision amounts to another slap in the face for our hardworking fishermen and coastal communities,” said Southerland.  “In shrinking our red snapper season to only nine days, it is clear the current management system is being driven by a job-crushing agenda that is focused more on putting fishermen out of business than helping foster economic growth.  It’s past time that much-needed changes are made to how red snapper is managed in the Gulf of Mexico.”
