Daytona - Pedestrian safety will again be emphasized at the big races in Daytona Beach, as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) steps up its summertime “Alert Today Alive Tomorrow” campaign; a statewide and year-round effort to eliminate injuries and deaths on Florida roadways, especially among pedestrians and bicyclists.

As it did earlier this year during Speedweeks, FDOT is partnering with Florida native Scott Lagasse Jr. to promote this important message. Lagasse will drive the #29 Alert Today Alive Tomorrow Toyota Camry in the Subway Firecracker 250 Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, July 4. Lagasse, along with FDOT District 1 Secretary Billy Hattaway, who is leading a statewide effort to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, will be in the Speedway Media Center from 1 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. to discuss the program and answer questions.

The effort is supported by both the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) and Daytona International Speedway. This partnership increases visibility of the safety campaign. Speedway officials expect many thousands of visitors to the July 4th holiday races and want to remind everyone to pay special attention around the track. There will be a lot of pedestrian activity. Remember to stay alert because safety doesn’t happen by accident.
