Florida’s Steady Job Growth Shows Strength in the Economy
Florida’s job growth is steadily improving according to a report from the independent watchdog group Florida TaxWatch. The report analyzes job growth data and shows higher job creation numbers for Florida than in the previous year, indicating a healthier state economy.
“Florida’s economy is strengthening every day thanks to the policies enacted by the state Legislature and Governor, who have made job creation a priority for Floridians,” said Dominic M. Calabro, President and CEO of Florida TaxWatch, the independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit taxpayer research institute and government watchdog. “More Floridians are working in 2014 than ever before.”
The monthly Economic Commentary published by Florida TaxWatch shows Florida surpassed and continues to exceed pre-recession job growth rates in 2014. New jobs are being created across the state in nearly every community, and Florida’s unemployment rate of 6.2 percent as of June is the lowest among neighboring states.
Overall, the report indicates that Florida’s economy is moving out the recovery period. The positive new job creation and falling unemployment rate is one gauge of economic growth and recovery.
“The increase in jobs for the first six months of 2014 shows that our economy is stable and growing,” said Jerry D. Parrish, Ph.D., Chief Economist for Florida TaxWatch. “These new jobs will further benefit Florida by increasing the state’s sales and use tax revenues, due to more Floridians having more disposable income.”
While the report highlights that federal and state government employment was reduced in the first six months of 2014, total government employment has increased due to the creation of an estimated 2,800 jobs in local government. The Florida TaxWatch Taxpayer’s Pocket Budget Guide to the FY2014-15 State Budget also contains information about the increasing local government staff at the expense of the declining state workforce.
