July 25 through August 1, 2014
Palm Beach County – Palm Beach County traffic will be affected this week by ongoing construction projects and maintenance work, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) officials report. Weather permitting; closures will be in effect on I-95 and in other areas throughout Palm Beach County for construction activities.

I-95 Corridor Projects:
I-95 Interchange at Spanish River Boulevard
Construction on this 2.5-mile project began Monday, January 13, 2014, in the City of Boca Raton. Work consists of constructing a new interchange at Spanish River Boulevard and I-95, widening Spanish River Boulevard west of FAU Boulevard, constructing 13 bridges between Spanish River Boulevard and Yamato Road, signalized intersection improvements and the addition of auxiliary lanes on Yamato Road, and sound wall construction along Yamato Road and on the east side of I-95 north of Yamato Road. The project costs an estimated $67 million. The work is being performed by Astaldi Construction and is expected to be completed early 2017.
Restrictions: The outside lanes of I-95 northbound and southbound, between Glades Road and Yamato Road, will be closed, nightly, Sunday night through Friday morning, with the first lane closing at 9 p.m., and the second lane, if needed, closing 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., through Sunday, September 7.
I-95 Noise Wall Installation from north of Lake Ida to south of Woolbright Road
Construction on this 1-mile project began Monday, January 6, 2014, in the City of Boynton Beach. Work consists of installation of a ground and shoulder mounted noise wall, overhead sign, guardrail, drainage and sod. The project will cost an estimated $2.3 million. The work is being performed by Construct Group Corp and is expected to be completed fall 2014.
Restrictions: All lanes are open.
Southern Palm Beach County Projects:
Glades Road (CR 808) from State Road 7 to Lyons Road
Construction on this 1.5-mile project began Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in Boca Raton. Work consists of repaving the roadway, signalization upgrades, mast arm installation, curb, sidewalk, and guardrail upgrades, and sign, landscape and irrigation improvements. The project costs an estimated $2.4 million. The work is being performed by Weekley Asphalt Paving, Inc. and is expected to be completed fall 2014.
Restrictions: One lane will be closed, daily, westbound, 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with one lane closed, eastbound, 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday through summer 2014. One lane will be closed, nightly, westbound, 6:30 p.m. until 7 a.m., with one lane closed, eastbound, 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday through summer 2014.
Central Palm Beach County Projects:
Lantana Road (CR 812) from Sunset Road to east of I-95
Construction on this 0.6-mile project began Monday, July 8, 2013, in the Town of Lantana. Work consists of repaving the roadway, widening the I-95 overpass bridge, and replacing lighting and traffic railing. The project costs an estimated $6.1 million. The work is being performed by Zep Construction and is expected to be completed spring 2015.
Restrictions: I-95 southbound, at Lantana Road, may have up to three lanes closed in each direction, intermittently, 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. In conjunction with these closures, one lane of the I-95 southbound exit ramp to Lantana Road may be closed, 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Lantana Road at I-95 may have one lane closed in each direction, intermittently, 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., Sunday night through Friday morning. Due to construction activities, I-95 southbound ramp shoulders are closed and pedestrian traffic on Lantana Road is shifted to the north side.
US 1/Dixie Highway from Sterns Street to Lake Worth Avenue (Town of Lantana)
Construction on this 0.4-mile project will begin Monday, July 21, 2014, in the Town of Lantana. Work consists of installing new French Drains in the outside lanes adjacent to the curb on US 1/Dixie Highway, from Sterns Street to Lake Wroth Avenue. New sidewalks and paving will be added adjacent to the new drainage structures. This is one of four drainage installation projects throughout Palm Beach County. The cost for all four projects is an estimated $1.3 million. The work is being performed by Community Asphalt Corporation. This first installation project in the Town of Lantana is expected to be completed late summer 2014.
Restrictions: The northbound outside lane may be closed, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Flagler Memorial Bridge Replacement Project
This 0.66-mile Design/Build project includes replacing the existing bascule (draw) bridge with a new bascule bridge connecting the Town of Palm Beach and the City of West Palm Beach over the Lake Worth Lagoon and the Intracoastal Waterway. The Flagler Drive overpass will be replaced with an “at-grade” intersection. New lighting, pedestrian features, traffic signals, drainage, and landscaping are also included. The Design/Build team for this project is PCL Civil Constructers and Hardesty & Hanover. New Millennium Engineering, Inc. provides Construction Engineering and Inspection services on behalf of FDOT. Active construction began on Sept. 10, 2012, and will last until early 2017. The estimated construction cost is $94.2 million.
Restriction: The Flagler Memorial Bridge is closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic until Nov. 1, 2014. During this closure, drivers are being detoured to the Royal Park Bridge to cross the Intracoastal Waterway.
Restriction: Temporary traffic restrictions are in place at the intersection of Flagler Drive and the Royal Park Bridge. Drivers going south on Flagler Drive cannot turn left to go east over the Royal Park Bridge and drivers going west over the Royal Park Bridge cannot turn left to go south on Flagler Drive. These restrictions will remain in place while the Flagler Memorial Bridge is closed. The following detours are in place:
- Drivers going south on Flagler Drive who want to go east over the Royal Park Bridge should take S. Dixie Highway to Okeechobee Boulevard and go east on Okeechobee Boulevard to cross the Royal Park Bridge.
- Drivers going west on the Royal Park Bridge who want to go south on Flagler Drive should continue west to S. Dixie Highway, go south on S. Dixie Highway to Okeechobee Boulevard, and go east on Okeechobee Boulevard to Flagler Drive.
Restriction: The outside northbound lane on Flagler Drive will be closed as needed between 3Street and 6 Street, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. At least one northbound lane will remain open at all times. Drivers should watch for trucks entering and exiting the work zone.
Marine Restrictions: The Flagler Memorial Bridge spans are in the “open” position with no anticipated impacts to marine traffic. Restrictions and openings at the Royal Park Bridge and Southern Boulevard Bridge have been adjusted as follows: The Royal Park Bridge opens once per hour at 15 minutes past the hour with no openings from 7:16 a.m. to 9:14 a.m. and from 4:16 p.m. to 6:14 p.m., Monday through Friday. On weekends and Federal holidays, the bridge opens twice per hour at 15 minutes past the hour and 45 minutes past the hour. The Southern Boulevard Bridge opens twice per hour on the hour and at 30 minutes past the hour with no openings from 7:31 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and from 4:01 p.m. to 5:59 p.m., Monday through Friday. On weekends and Federal holidays, the bridge opens twice per hour on the hour and at 30 minutes past the hour. Northern Palm Beach County Projects:
US 1 (SR 5) from South of 13th Street to Silver Beach Road
This 1.4-mile resurfacing project began Monday, July 30, 2012, in the City of Riviera Beach. Work includes milling and resurfacing the existing roadway, drainage and water main installation throughout the project, curb and sidewalk replacement, upgrades to pedestrian and traffic signalization, signage upgrades, and sidewalk and driveway ramp installation to meet ADA standards. The work is being performed by Gibbs and Register, Inc., and is expected to be completed summer 2014. The estimated construction cost is $12.8 million.
Restrictions: Traffic is open to two lanes in each direction during inactive construction periods. During active construction periods, intermittent lane closures will continue in each direction as needed. Side streets may also have brief intermittent closures during this time. Left turn lanes will remain open at signalized intersections. Business detours are available using Avenue A and C to the east of US 1, and Avenue E to the west of US 1. Traffic will remain in this pattern through July 2014.
Western Palm Beach County Projects:
State Road 80 (Belle Glade), from State Road 15 (S 441) to County Road 880
This 18-mile resurfacing project will begin Monday, July 28, 2014, in the City of Belle Glade. Work includes 6 foot widening of the inside and outside shoulders, milling and resurfacing the existing roadway in various locations, installation of a Fog Detection Warning System, and signing, signalization, and guardrail improvements. The work is being performed by Ranger Construction Industries, Inc., and is expected to be completed fall 2015. The estimated construction cost is $20.6 million.
Restrictions: One lane may be closed in each direction, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Maintenance, Utility and Permit Closures:
Restrictions: Southern Boulevard, over the Intracoastal Waterway in the City of West Palm Beach and the Town of Palm Beach, will have alternating traffic, 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday, July 28, through Thursday, July 31, for work order repairs.
Restrictions: I-95 northbound, just south of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, will have the outside lane and shoulder closed, 9 p.m. until 5 a.m., Monday night, July 28, through Thursday morning, July 31, for barrier wall repair. In conjunction with these closures, the outside lane and shoulder will be closed, 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., Wednesday, July 30.
Restrictions: State Road A1A (Ocean Boulevard) at Atlantic Avenue, in the City of Delray Beach, may have one lane closed intermittently in each direction, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for strain pole removal, signing & pavement markings, through July 2014.
Restrictions: There will be daily lane reductions at NE/SE 5th Avenue, from Atlantic Avenue to NE 3rd Street, SE 3rd Street to Atlantic Avenue, SE 5th Street to SE 3rd Street, and NE 7th Street to NE 4th Street in the City of Delray Beach, for storm drainage installation and curb and gutter work. There will also be daily lane reductions at NE/SE 6th Avenue, from SE 3rd Street to NE 3rd Street. Side streets will be detoured as this work progresses. Restrictions: The intersection of South Dixie Highway and Belvedere Road, in the City of West Palm Beach, will undergo a full around-the-clock closure beginning Monday, July 28, through Sunday, August 3, for water main installation. Northbound Dixie Highway Detour: Southern Boulevard westbound to Parker Avenue; north on Parker Avenue to Okeechobee Boulevard; east on Okeechobee Boulevard to South Dixie Highway. Southbound Dixie Highway Detour: Lakeview Avenue westbound to Parker Avenue; south on Parker Avenue to Southern Boulevard; east on Southern Boulevard to South Dixie Highway. Eastbound Belvedere Road Detour: Parker Avenue northbound to Okeechobee Boulevard or southbound to Southern Boulevard; then east on Okeechobee Boulevard or Southern Boulevard to South Dixie Highway. Westbound Belvedere Road: Belvedere Road will be closed between South Dixie Highway and South Olive Avenue except for local business access from South Olive Avenue. Restrictions: Bold landscaping, including approximately 3,100 palm trees, is currently being installed along I-95 between Southern Boulevard and Belvedere Road, in the City of West Palm Beach. Work will continue through early Fall 2014. At this time, no lane closures are expected; however, motorists should be aware of trucks entering and exiting the highway in this area.
Restrictions: A1A at Carlin Park, in the Town of Jupiter, is closed to all traffic between the north and middle entrances of Carlin Park, through July 2014, for bridge removal and construction. Traffic will be detoured via Indiantown Road, US 1, Marcinski Road, and A1A. For more information on this project, please contact Palm Beach County Engineering at 561-684-4000.
