SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Columnist Has It All Wrong On Environment:
Charlie Crist Made Empty Promises While Rick Scott Has Kept His Commitments

STATEMENT FROM STATE REPRESENTATIVE MATT CALDWELL (R-LEHIGH ACRES): “Charlie Crist’s term as governor was full of empty promises – empty promises on jobs and empty promises on Florida’s environment. Crist put his own political career above protecting and investing in Florida’s most beautiful, natural treasures – a reason why people from all over the world come to our state. Thankfully, Rick Scott has committed to restoring the Everglades, safeguarding our springs and protecting the Florida Keys.”

CHARLIE CRIST VS. RICK SCOTT ON PROTECTING FLORIDA’S WATERS

MYTH: Columnist claimsunder current law, funding for an alternative water supply and other restoration projects is supposed to be $100 million a year” (Paula Dockery, “Rick Scott Is No Teddy Roosevelt,” The Miami Herald, 8/7/14)

  • FACT: Governor Scott’s 10-year, $500 million commitment to alterative water supply dwarfs the less than $70 million Crist provided to develop alternative supplies of water. During Charlie Crist’s term, funding for alternative water supply was cut from $60 million to nothing. (“Let’s Keep Florida Beautiful,” Rick Scott for Florida, 8/3/14)
  • FACT: While Charlie Crist invested less than $8 million toward springs restoration and protection, Governor Scott has signed $40 million in state grants, resulting in more than $100 million to protect these iconic water bodies. (“Let’s Keep Florida Beautiful,” Rick Scott for Florida, 8/3/14)
  • FACT: Now Governor Scott also has a 10-year, $500 million commitment to protecting our springs. (“Let’s Keep Florida Beautiful,” Rick Scott for Florida, 8/3/14)

THE HYPOCRISY OF TOM STEYER AND CHARLIE CRIST

MYTH: Columnist claims Tom Steyer and Charlie Crist care about the environment – [B]illionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer hinted at spending $10 million or more in the governor’s race to defeat Scott — a boon to Crist. Steyer’s interest is in climate change …” (Paula Dockery, “Rick Scott Is No Teddy Roosevelt,” The Miami Herald, 8/7/14)

  • FACT: The Calgary Herald called Tom Steyer’s environmental campaign “grand hypocrisy” and The New York Times noted that “he is spending a fortune earned from” investments in energy sources that he is now trying to “shutter.” (Editorial, “Tom Steyer’s Grand Hypocrisy,” Calgary Herald, 9/16/13; (Michael Barbaro and Coral Davenport, “Aims Of Donor Are Shadowed By Past In Coal,” The New York Times, 7/4/14)
  • FACT: Charlie Crist only embraces environmental issues when politically convenient. According to The Tampa Bay Times, Crist cancelled a “climate change summit” in 2009 to help his prospects as a Republican candidate for the United States Senate. (Craig Pittman, “For Gov. Charlie Crist, It’s Not Easy Being Green,” The Tampa Bay Times, 11/27/2009)

RICK SCOTT’S RECORD OF ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

MYTH: Columnist claims Governor Scott “has embraced his inner green — just three months out from a tight reelection. While I’d like to believe he is sincere, based on his actions over the past four years, color me skeptical.” (Paula Dockery, “Rick Scott Is No Teddy Roosevelt,” The Miami Herald, 8/7/14)

  • FACT: While Charlie Crist Did Not Keep His Commitments To The Everglades, Rick Scott Has Been Praised By Environmental Leaders From The Everglades Foundation To Audubon Florida Have Praised Rick Scott’s Commitment To Restoration. “Eric Eikenberg – Everglades Foundation said, ‘Governor Scott understands the importance of improving the Everglades ecosystem, which is evident not only with his water quality plan but also with his $130 million investment for improving America’s Everglades’ … Eric Draper – Audubon Florida said, ‘We are seeing real progress on the Everglades. Governor Scott deserves credit for following through on projects to get water clean and delivered to the natural system.’” (Press Release, “What They Are Saying: Environmental Leaders Applaud Gov. Scott’s Commitment To The Everglades,” Office Of Governor Rick Scott, 1/22/14)
  • FACT: While Charlie Crist Provided No Investments To The Florida Keys, Rick Scott “Approved $50M Bond For Keys Sewer Projects” Under The Mayfield Grant Program In 2012 As Well As An Additional $50 Million In 2014. (“Fla. Gov. Approves $50M Bond For Keys Sewer Projects,” Florida Keys Keynoter, 4/17/12; “State Representative, Local Officials Focusing On Water, Land For 2015 Legislative Session,” Florida Keys Keynoter, 7/12/14)
