WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Florida Legislators Applaud Governor Scott’s Commitment to Transportation

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, legislator’s applauded Governor Rick Scott announcement of the advancement of more than $806 million for six major transportation projects throughout the state that will enhance safety, relieve congestion and increase mobility for Florida’s families. 

Northwest Florida:

President Don Gaetz said, “Setting a definitive start date for the widening of US 98 will provide greater certainty to the residents of Panama City who have been waiting for these improvements to begin. I appreciate Governor Scott’s dedication to transportation infrastructure improvements that fuel Northwest Florida businesses and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.”

Representative Marti Coley, Speaker Pro Tempore said, “I applaud Governor Scott for advancing the transportation projects in Northwest Florida. With his commitment of $95 million we will be able to make key improvements to our infrastructure in Bay County, which will benefit both the residents and the tourism industry in our coastal region.”

Representative Jimmy Patronis said, “I applaud Governor Scott’s commitment to the families of Northwest Florida. With his commitment to our transportation needs, families will experience less congestion to and from work and school and will be able to spend more time at home with loved ones.”

West Central Florida:

Speaker Will Weatherford said, “Thanks to Governor Scott’s leadership, we are making historic investments in our roads which will pay dividends as Florida’s economy continues to grow.” said House Speaker Will Weatherford.

Senator Tom Lee said, “I applaud Governor Scott’s commitment to the families of this region as he continues to make transportation infrastructure a priority.  Thanks to the advancement of this project and his commitment of $89.5 million our businesses will be able to have enhanced connectivity to other cities and states.”

Senator Jeff Brandes said, “The Tampa area has continued to grow and prosper, and with this it is important that we are able to transport goods around the state and region. Thanks to Governor Scott’s advancement of the I-75 project our area will have better interregional connectivity.”

Senator Bill Galvano said, “I appreciate Governor Scott’s efforts to support our infrastructure. This project will bring jobs to the local economy, strengthen regional connectivity within the state and beyond, enhance public safety and emergency evacuation, improve people and freight mobility, and accommodate current and future traffic growth.”

Senator John Legg said, “The announcement to add lanes and reconstruct I-75 is exciting news for the community. Governor Scott is making a positive impact on Florida’s future by enhancing our transportation system.”

Representative Dana Young, Majority Whip said, “I applaud Governor Scott for his commitment to enhance Florida’s infrastructure. This investment is a win for the citizens and businesses of Tampa Bay.”

East Central Florida:

Senator John Thrasher said, “An important part to growing Florida’s economy is making improvements to our transportation system, which creates more connectivity throughout the region. Governor Scott understands this and these improvements will create a safer environment for commuters, tourists and commerce.”

Senator Dorothy Hukill said, “The interchange project is a boost to the Daytona Beach region. It benefits businesses—large and small—along the corridor, including the region’s major tourist magnets; the Daytona International Speedway; US 92 and beach businesses.”

Representative Dave Hood said, “The interchange project will benefit nearby Daytona Beach International Airport with better connectivity to and from Interstate 95 and Interstate 4.The widening of I-95 finishes the last gap, making it at least three lanes wide in both directions from Miami to the Florida-Georgia state line, thanks to Governor Scott.”

Representative David Santiago said, “Major projects like this ensure Florida’s transportation system remains in the forefront, among the best in the nation. Governor Scott is helping to open up economic opportunities benefiting businesses, visitors and residents; including Florida’s families.”

Northeast Florida:

Senator Aaron Bean said, “The most significant benefit of advancing the I-295 Express Lanes between Butler Boulevard and State Road 9B is to reduce the congestion that not only exists now, but even more so with the completion of State Road 9B down to I-95. I applaud Governor Scott for his help in advancing this project and bettering the lives of families in Northeast Florida.”

Representative Daniel Davis said, “When the section of SR 9B that is currently under construction between U.S. 1 and I-95 opens up in 2016, the additional traffic will significantly increase the amount of traffic on I-295. But thanks to Governor Scott’s advancement of this $179.5 million in funding, more lanes will be added to help our area and relieve congestion.”

Representative Charles McBurney said, “The proposed project will enhance safety, reduce travel delays and improve access to for families in Northeast Florida, and Governor Scott’s investment in infrastructure today will help to advance this project.”

Representative Janet Adkins said, “The additional four lanes will give motorists some relief through this already constrained corridor of I-295. I applaud Governor Scott’s commitment to improving Florida’s infrastructure and helping to increase the mobility of the Northeast Florida area.”

Southeast Florida:

Representative Eddy Gonzalez said, “This project will improve capacity and I applaud the Governor for recognizing the need for this improvement to the transportation system in Miami-Dade.”

Representative Jose Felix Diaz said, “I thank Governor Scott for recognizing the importance of advancing this critical Turnpike project. The project will provide congestion relief well into the next decade.”

Representative Carlos Trujillo said, “Five hundred cars travel the Turnpike each day in Miami-Dade County, and this project will help those motorists commute easier. Governor Scott has once again made our transportation system stronger by advancing the SR 821 project.”

Representative Jeanette Nuñez said, “This Turnpike project improves connectivity in South Florida. I thank Governor Scott for making it easier for residents and visitors to travel in the region.”

Representative Frank Artiles said, “This project will help to relieve congestion on our roads in Miami-Dade county, and thanks to Governor Scott this project will be happening ahead of schedule.” 

Southwest Florida:

Senator Nancy Detert said, “We are pleased to learn that Governor Scott and the Florida Department of Transportation will be spending $32.7 million to complete the addition of lanes on U.S. 41 from North Port through Charlotte County.  Good traffic flow is vital for the safety of both residents and visitors as well as access to our local businesses.”

Representative Doug Holder said, “I am thankful to Governor Scott and the FDOT for providing this valuable final expansion of US 41 to Enterprise Drive. This will increase traffic flow and promote business expansion.”

Representative Jim Boyd said, “I applaud Governor Scott’s commitment to improving Florida’s infrastructure all around the state and here in the Sarasota area. With $32.7 million we will be able to add more lanes to our roads that will promote growth in our area and bring more jobs to Southwest Florida.”

Representative Ray Pilon said, “This project proves that Southwest Florida is preparing for the growth along this important corridor. I applaud Governor Scott for his commitment on $32.7 million to help Southwest Florida families.”

Representative Greg Steube said, “Advancing this transportation project will help our communities as we continue to experience both job and population growth.
