Florida Hospital Association Receives Florida Health Care Coalition’s Community Quality Award
Award Recognizes FHA Hospital Engagement Network’s Success in Preventing 6,000 Cases of Harm and Reducing Costs by $20 Million Since 2012
Tallahassee, FL (August 20, 2014) – The Florida Hospital Association (FHA) has been selected as recipient of the 2014 Florida Health Care Coalition (FHCC) Community Quality Award. The award was presented today during FHCC’s 9th Annual South Florida Conference in Fort Lauderdale.
The award recognizes a Florida organization that developed successful collaborations to improve health care quality and lower costs. FHA is being recognized for creating and leading successful statewide clinical improvement collaboratives. One such collaborative is the Hospital Engagement Network (HEN), part of the federal Partnership for Patients, a national quality initiative aimed at reducing patient harm by 40 percent and readmissions by 20 percent.
“Improving the quality of care is important to Florida’s business community. It means a healthier workforce and reduced costs for both employers and employees,” said Karen van Caulil, Ph.D., FHCC president and CEO. “The Florida Hospital Association has shown that by working together, we can make these goals a reality for all Floridians.”
FHA’s HEN was developed in 2012 in coordination with the American Hospital Association’s Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET). Through the collaborative, Florida hospitals have access to state and national resources and work with others across the country to share best practices and improve in key focus areas, such as infections after surgery, blood clots, pneumonia and readmissions. The FHA HEN has also focused on creating a culture of safety within hospitals, and is helping hospitals across the state work together to share data and learnings.
“Providing safe, effective care is our top priority,” said Bruce Rueben, FHA president. “By working together, Florida’s hospitals continue to improve clinical performance and provide greater value to our patients and communities.”
To date, hospitals participating in the FHA HEN have prevented nearly 6,000 cases of harm and reduced health care costs by $20.6 million. View list of hospitals participating in the FHA HEN.
In addition to the FHA HEN, FHA’s successful quality initiatives have included the nation’s first statewide readmissions collaborative and the largest statewide surgical quality improvement program in the nation.
