The Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club today announced its endorsement of Charlie Crist (FL D-13) in the United StatesCongressional election.
“We are very pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Charlie Crist for election,” said David Harbeitner, spokesperson for the Suncoast group of Sierra Club. “In his long service to the state of Florida, he has been a consistent advocate for our environment. We are confident that he will continue to work to protect Florida’s environment for our families and for our future.”
As Governor, Crist led the state purchase of 70,000 acres of land for Everglades restoration and funded our Florida Forever program at $629 million over four years. He proposed a constitutional amendment to prohibit offshore drilling and fought to make sure BP paid billions back to Florida coastal communities after the Deepwater Horizon spill. He also enacted a renewable energy portfolio standard, created a solar energy rebate program and called for greater energy usage from renewable sources. Notably, he believes climate change is real and convened Florida’s first national Climate Change Summit where he signed three Executive Orders calling for the reduction of carbon emissions. A longtime resident of the Gulf Coast, Crist understands the importance of the environment to both our economic success and our lifestyles.
