Tallahassee, Fla. – The House Redistricting Committee will meet Friday, January 27. The committee will consider amendments to and vote on state legislative and congressional redistricting maps recently approved by the House Redistricting subcommittees. During their January 20 meeting, committee members opted to narrow their focus for the January 27 meeting to HJR 6001 (state senate), HB 6005 (congressional) and HJR 6011 (state house). The Senate field hearing will explore Florida’s efforts to suppress through passage and implementation of laws that make it harder to register to vote, harder to cast a ballot and harder to have your vote counted. The hearing is also expected to address Florida’s historic disfranchisement system which keeps more than one million Floridians from being able to vote based on a previous felony conviction.

The NAACP, ACLU, Rainbow PUSH and other organizations have opposed Florida’s voter suppression measures from the beginning and are continuing the opposition through testimony at the field hearing and ongoing federal legal challenges.

Tallahassee, Florida – On Thursday (Jan. 26), more than 400 students from institutions in the State University System of Florida are expected to converge in the Capitol courtyard – between new and historic Capitol buildings – at 1 p.m. for the annual “Rally in Tally,” an event organized and produced by the Florida Student Association.

FSA Chairman Mike Long, a sophomore at New College of Florida, will announce the FSA’s 2012 Session legislative agenda, which has three core issues. Long also will deliver the student perspective on the Governor’s budget recommendations.

The FSA also will respond to the bill filed for a second consecutive year that would change the process for how student representation is selected for the Florida Board of Governors of the State University. Currently, the 11 student body presidents serve on their respective university’s Board of Trustees. For the Board of Governors, the student representative is elected from that group of membership universities in the Florida Student Association. The FSA strongly opposes any change to the democratic process currently in place – there is an election held each year in the FSA, for a one-year term, for the student representative on the Florida Board of Governors.

The FSA also strongly opposes a tuition increase in 2012. Long says that after a nearly 20 percent reduction in Bright Futures awards, decreasing state financial aid award amounts, and a 15 percent total (base and differential) tuition increase in 2011, Florida’s citizens cannot afford yet another year of drastic increases to the cost of a college education.

The Florida Student Association is an independent non-profit organization representing 300,000 students at 10 institutions within the State University System. Each of the 10 universities pays dues to support the organization and its statewide mission.
