CONTACT: ACLU of Florida Media Office, (786) 363-2737, media@aclufl.org

Despite court rulings that social security numbers are not required for public school enrollment, many Florida school districts are requesting them on enrollment forms without making clear to families that the information is optional.

Including social security numbers on admission forms, and implying they may be required, can intimidate immigrant families who may not be documented or have reason to worry about a review of their residency status.

The ACLU of Florida requested and reviewed enrollment forms and procedures for all Florida school districts and will issue a state report card on the findings.

The press conference will take place at:

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 22, U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) along with Steve Case, Revolution LLC CEO and member of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, and Robert Litan of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, will unveil bipartisan legislation, Startup Act 2.0, aimed at jumpstarting the economy through the creation and growth of new businesses. This bipartisan legislation sets out to prove the critics wrong: Congress can get something done during an election year by coming together to strengthen the economy and create jobs.

Startup Act 2.0 picks up where the JOBS Act left off by doing more to create an environment in which entrepreneurs can succeed. Research has shown that for close to three decades, companies less than five years old have created almost all of the net new jobs in America—averaging about 3 million jobs each year. Startup Act 2.0 creates new opportunities for America-educated, entrepreneurial immigrants to remain in the U.S. where their talent and ideas can fuel growth and create American jobs. The bill also alleviates regulatory burdens that make it more difficult for businesses to expand and create jobs. Finally, Startup Act 2.0 makes changes to the tax code to encourage investment in startup companies.

Startup Act 2.0 builds upon the original Startup Act introduced by Sens. Moran and Warner in December, and it has been strengthened by including widely-supported provisions of S. 1866, the AGREE Act, introduced by Sens. Coons and Rubio in November. Many of the principles included in Startup Act 2.0 are based on the research and analysis of the Kauffman Foundation, and are supported by President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness.

What: Sens. Rubio, Coons, Moran and Warner, along with Steve Case, Revolution LLC CEO and member of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, and Robert Litan of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, to unveil Startup Act 2.0, a bipartisan jobs bill aimed at jumpstarting the economy through the creation and growth of new businesses.

Who: U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)
U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.)
U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.)
U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.)

Steve Case, Revolution LLC CEO and member of President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness
Robert Litan, Vice President for Research and Policy, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation

When: Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Demonstrators Plan to Tell Insurer to Stop Using Premiums to Hurt Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Seniors, advocates, health plan members and shareholders of Coventry Health Care will gather inside and outside of the company’s annual meeting Thursday to demand that the company stop using policyholder premiums and taxpayer money to secretly fund political actions that hurt American families. The activists will protest Coventry’s history of shady marketing practices targeting seniors in Medicare and Medicaid and release a report detailing the company’s profit margins, lobby expenditures and political donations over the past few years.

Meanwhile, shareholders will voice support for a resolution that would promote greater disclosure of the company’s political spending. Coventry investors demanding disclosure of all political spending will question the company’s executives and directors about investing in political efforts to overturn the Affordable Care Act.

Coventry is the latest corporation to be held to account by the 99%. Around the country, angry people have been making their voices heard at shareholder meetings, including those of Bank of America, WellPoint, Cigna, General Electric, Wells Fargo, Carnival Cruise Lines and others.

What: Rally and Press Conference at Coventry Health’s Annual Shareholder Meeting

Who: Organize Now, FLARA, Awake Broward, and others

When: Thursday, May 17 @ 8:30am ET

Where: Outside the Ritz-Carlton Hotal, 1 N. Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 33304
