Florida Department of Children and Families Hosts Community Call to Action Encourages Donation of Time, Talent and Resources during Difficult Economy in an to Effort Reduce Homelessness for Children – One Family at a Time
Who: The Florida Department of Children and Families with support from:
The Florida Department of Education, Central Florida Commission on
Homelessness, Heart of Florida United Way, First Baptist Church of Orlando,
Sonny’s BBQ, Bridges to Circles, Team Gamez, Doorstep Delivery, Homeless
Services Network of Central Florida, Orange, Osceola and Seminole county
school boards, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and media
partner WKMG.
What: This Call to Action includes special guests such as DCF Secretary
David Wilkins and presentations from each of the essential communities
within Central Florida who are improving the lives of homeless children and
their families everyday: the Department of Education, faith-based,
non-profit, corporate, small businesses as well as generous private
citizens. Representation from these organizations will offer the latest
numbers, challenges, efforts, as well as a means to be a part of the
solution.
The goal of this event is to ensure that those interested in supporting the
efforts of organizations, through their time, talent and resources, know
how they can make a difference. While numbers and statistics may easily
overwhelm, by focusing on one family at a time, the Central Florida
Community can preclude homelessness for children and lead the nation in
solutions. The Department of Children and Families will also announce new
efforts within the organization to support homeless children and families.
When: Friday Jan. 6, 9-12 p.m.
Where: First Baptist Church of Orlando, 3000 S John Young, Pkwy, Orlando,
FL
Why: Recently, a national broadcast placed Central Florida at the
forefront of a growing epidemic regarding homeless children and families.
While the piece featured Central Florida, the subject of homelessness and
children is nationwide. The response from the community to help was
overwhelming. The Department was encouraged by the donation of time, talent
and resources in an economy where not all may offer monetary contributions.
Through our media partner, WKMG, the Call to Action will feature the story
of one local family who went from home to homeless and the challenges they
encounter trying to get back on their feet.
