CFO Alex Sink Calls on Feinberg to Revisit Gulf Claims Process to Fix Flawed Gulf Claims Process

TALLAHASSEE — Florida CFO Alex Sink today sent a letter to Kenneth Feinberg, administrator of the new Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF), calling on him to rewrite the rules in favor of Florida’s small businesses who have been harmed by the oil spill, and also to do away with the requirement that Florida’s small business must re-file claims with the GCCF that have already been filed with BP.

“As you take over the claims process starting today, it appears that you have rejected my request in favor of an extremely restrictive view as to who is eligible for recovery,” CFO Sink wrote. “In my opinion, the GCCF rules must be rewritten in favor of those who were harmed by this catastrophe, as opposed to those who caused it.” … Continue Reading

TALLAHASSEE – Governor Charlie Crist today announced BP will provide $7 million to the Northwest Florida Travel Council for tourism marketing and advertising. Expressing appreciation for the grant, Governor Crist promptly sent a letter to BP’s Doug Suttles, requesting another $43 million from BP to complete a second round of a tourism marketing and advertising campaign. Florida residents and visitors can track the state’s response efforts to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill by utilizing the Florida Division of Emergency Management’s GATOR tracking device. GATOR, which stands for Geospatial Assessment Tool for Operations and Response, tracks reports of oil impacts on Florida’s shoreline, reconnaissance and cleanup missions, weather radar and tropical system updates using geographic data that is updated in real time. Since Governor Crist announced the website, more than 14,600 positions related to response and recovery efforts have been posted and more than 44,600 people have registered and applied for these and other positions. To help children cope with stress caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Lutheran Services Florida (LSF), in partnership with the Florida Department of Children and Families and other local sponsors, will provide a therapeutic camp experience. Camp Beyond the Horizon will address the educational and emotional needs of children affected by the disaster. Camp Beyond the Horizon is specifically designed for children in grades kindergarten through six. The camp allows children to process their experiences and their grief in a safe, supportive, caring atmosphere that also offers fun and recreation. TALLAHASSEE – The State Emergency Response Team, in coordination with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), today announced the removal of supplemental Tier 3 boom within the next 72 to 96 hours in the Panhandle counties. The removal is in light of the potential tropical activity in the Gulf of Mexico.

“During a tropical storm boom can cause additional damage to the natural resources that we are trying to protect from oil spill impacts,” said DEP Secretary Michael W. Although a portion of Florida’s coastal waters offshore of Escambia County are temporarily closed to the harvest of saltwater fish, crabs and shrimp, Florida seafood products remain safe and plentiful and have not been affected by the oil spill. Most of the Gulf of Mexico is untouched by oil, and Florida’s commercial fishermen continue to harvest products from these clean waters. There are currently no plans to use dispersants in Florida. If dispersants are ever considered in state waters, the determination to use the chemical would be evaluated by DEP with input from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Florida Wildlife Research Institute and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Dispersants are a chemical used to break up oil into small droplets so that they are more easily degraded. This chemical is most effective against fresh oil, unlike the weathered oil impacts Florida has seen in its waters. … Continue Reading
