Florida Democrats: Whitewashing of McCollum, Thrasher, Haridopolos & Cannon’s Alleged Crimes

July 1, 2010 Politics Comments Off

Florida Democratic Party Communications Director Eric Jotkoff released the following statement after completing a comprehensive review of the documents released from the criminal case against indicted RPOF Chairman Jim Greer, including a review by grassroots activists after the Florida Democratic Party posted the documents online. The documents suggested that the investigation is being deliberately steered away from Bill McCollum, Dean Cannon, Mike Haridopolos and John Thrasher’s alleged crimes in the case:

“While Floridians once again see why there needs to be a full and independent investigation into the massive corruption at the Republican Party of Florida, the Republican politicians that control Tallahassee are pulling out all the stops to block an honest investigation. Because it is increasingly clear that the Republican politicians currently controlling Tallahassee and this investigation are whitewashing over clear involvement by Bill McCollum, Dean Cannon, Mike Haridopolos and John Thrasher, the only way Floridians will get justice is to throw the corrupt Republicans out this fall.”

Florida Democrats: Marco Rubio Rakes In Thousands At Glitzy NYC Fundraiser From Billionaire Hedge Fund Manager And Other Wall Street Executives

Hedge Fund Billionaire Paul Singer Rakes In Cash For Rubio On Same Day U.S. House Of Representatives Passes Historic Wall Street Reform

Rubio Still Refuses to Lend His Support To Wall Street Reform

Last night, former Miami lobbyist and ethically challenged politician Marco Rubio benefited from a glitzy fundraiser in Manhattan expected to raise his Senate campaign tens of thousands of dollars.  The fundraiser was hosted by Paul Singer, a billionaire hedge fund manager, joined by other big shot Wall Street executives, who stand to be major contributors to Rubio.  Yesterday’s fundraiser was held on the same day that the U.S. House of Representatives passed an historic, pro-consumer Wall Street reform package, which Marco Rubio refuses to lend his support to.

“Marco Rubio is now the Republican establishment’s candidate, but now it is clear he’s Wall Street’s candidate too,” said Eric Jotkoff, Florida Democratic Party spokesman. “Last night as the House of Representatives passed a historic, pro-consumer Wall Street reform package, Rubio benefited from a lavish Manhattan fundraiser hosted by a hedge fund billionaire. Florida voters are not going to let Rubio get away with supporting the Wall Street ‘Fat Cats’ that helped bring our financial system to the brink of collapse while refusing to give support to Wall Street reform efforts.”

Paul Singer’s Wall Street-based Elliot Management is one of the largest “vulture fund” in the world. Vulture funds are predatory investors that seek to profit off the debts of the world’s poorest countries. They buy a nation’s debt for pennies on the dollar and then sue the indebted country to win repayment of the initial debt’s full value. [The Guardian, 3/10/2007; Associated Press, 5/22/07]. According to the firm’s press releases and trade publications, two of the firm’s main arms, Elliot International and Kensington International, are based in the “tax havens” of the Cayman Islands.  [Elliot Associates release via BusinessWire, 6/4/2002; Banking Wire, 9/12/2006]

Paul Singer, who founded the hedge fun Elliott Associates and has become a major behind-the-scenes player in the the world of Republican fundraising, is hosting an event in Manhattan tonight for at least five U.S. Senate hopefuls, multiple sources said.

The candidates include California’s Carly Fiorina, Washington’s Dino Rossi, Florida’s Marco Rubio, Arkansas’ John Boozman, and Pennsylvania’s Pat Toomey, the sources said.

I couldn’t reach Singer to discuss the event, but it’s expected to be large and send tens of thousands of dollars to each campaign.

Florida Democrats: GOP Primary Candidates’ Dirty Deeds Break Into the Open

As Rick Scott’s Role in Company Fraud Detailed, Newt Gingrich Returns Favor for Bill McCollum’s Attempted Cover-Up

The last few days have revealed to Floridians just how ethically challenged both Republican candidates for Governor really are — with in-depth reporting on Rick Scott’s connection to fraud at his former company and a Bill McCollum endorsement from Newt Gingrich, after McCollum voted to protect Gingrich from a special Congressional investigation. … Continue Reading

Florida Democrats: Loranne and Scott

June 25, 2010 Politics Comments Off

Over a year ago, I wrote to you about the amazing opportunity in this election for each of us to make history and elect new leadership in Florida – and we are well on our way.

As of last week, it is official. We have our nominees for Florida’s next CFO, Loranne Ausley, and Florida’s next Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Scott Maddox. They are both exactly the kind of leaders Tallahassee needs to clean up after the mess the Republicans have left.

Loranne has been a leading voice for Florida’s children and families for years – whether it is in the State House or serving as Chair of the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation. She is a proven problem-solver and will follow in Alex Sink’s footsteps by using her skills to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used wisely in Tallahassee.

Her opponent, Senator Jeff Atwater, is the ultimate political insider. He has spent his career watching out for the banking and insurance industries, and has been a key player in the Republican Party’s culture of corruption. He was also the architect of the Tallahassee power grab on education and is even interested in turning back the clock and forcing himself between women and their doctors.

As Loranne says, “It’s time to fight back.” Take a minute and visit Loranne Ausley’s website and join her campaign today, to help her become Florida’s next CFO.

And Sen. Atwater isn’t the only typical politician the Republicans have nominated. Congressman Adam Putnam is hoping to escape his miserable record in Washington D.C. by running for Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services. After leading Republican efforts in gutting consumer protections, supporting drilling off Florida, and currying favor with special interests there is no reason for him to ask for a promotion.

But that is why we need Scott Maddox as Florida’s next Ag Commissioner because he will fight for Floridians and protect consumers. Whether it is fighting against more drilling off our beaches or standing up against the special interests, Maddox has a proven record of fighting for us. Raised on farmlands in Homestead and in rural Leon County – he will work every day to preserve Florida’s unique quality of life and keep it a special place for all of us.

Help Scott Maddox fight back against Congressman Putnam and his special interest pals. Take a minute and visit Scott Maddox’s website and join his campaign today, and help him take back the Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services office for Floridians.

Thank you so much for helping Loranne and Scott – with your help, I know we can have an amazing year for Florida Democrats.

Sincerely,

Karen Thurman

Florida Democrats: The Rubio-Rivera Foreclosure Fundraiser

Florida Democrats: The Rubio-Rivera Foreclosure Fundraiser

From the Department of You Can Make This Up:  Miami Lobbyists Marco Rubio and David Rivera are holding a fundraiser together today in Washington, DC.

Last week, it was reported that Rubio and his self proclaimed “disciple” David Rivera purchased a house together and then defaulted on the payments, allowing the property to fall into foreclosure.

The pair of ethically challenged Republican politicians have now unwittingly opened up a can of worms when their embarrassing financial tactics were made public.

Some Questions That Need To Be Answered:

Did Rubio and Rivera willfully withhold mortgage payments that were owed based on their mortgage contract?
Did this tactic of withholding payments allow them to renegotiate or offer the house as a short sale?
In either case did they have to disclose their income and assets? If so, what are they?
What did their stalling and negotiating tactics cost the government in lost property values or tax write-off for themselves or the banks?
And is this whole mess just another example of Marco Rubio getting another sweetheart mortgage deal from his political allies?

Florida Democrats: Rick Scott Refuses to Learn from BP’s Mistakes, Continues to Push More Oil Drilling

Florida Democrats: Rick Scott Refuses to Learn from BP’s Mistakes, Continues to Push More Oil Drilling

Since oil began spilling into the Gulf of Mexico over fifty days ago, most of Florida’s Republican politicians have stopped chanting “Drill Baby, Drill” as they scramble to hide their previous push to drill off Florida. Yet Rick Scott, the current frontrunner for the Republican Gubernatorial nod, has been a rare exception among Florida Republicans in remaining consistent in calling for expanded drilling and he continues fighting to build oil derricks near our beaches. … Continue Reading

Florida Democrats: Bill McCollum Only “Unhappy a Bit” With BP, As Their Oil Hits Our Beaches

Florida Democrats: From His Glass House, Rick Scott Attacks McCollum/Greer Relationship

After indicted Republican Chairman Jim Greer was arrested this week, Bill McCollum has come under renewed scrutiny for his role in the Republican Party scandal and his efforts to delay the investigation into Greer’s alleged illegal activities. Following this week’s unpredictable events, disgraced executive Rick Scott’s campaign has issued blistering statement attacking McCollum for his close relationship with Greer, saying McCollum is part of a “culture of corruption and insider dealings.” While Scott’s statements are true, they blatantly ignore Scott’s own ethical issues and record of his company defrauding the government for their own gain.

“I hope Rick Scott has insurance on his glass house, because he’s been throwing an awful lot of stones,” said Florida Democratic Party spokesman Eric Jotkoff. “With Rick Scott’s former company pleading guilty to 14 counts of fraud and paying $1.7 billion in fines, Scott hardly has a leg to stand on to talk about ethics and accountability.”

Scott and McCollum have battled in the last month over Scott’s record as head of Columbia/HCA. After Scott was forced to resign, the company went on to plead guilty in the largest Medicare fraud case in history. It was recently reported that while in Congress, McCollum tried to weaken whistleblower protection laws, which would have made it harder to prosecute healthcare fraud cases like the ones Scott’s company, Columbia/HCA, was found guilty of committing.

Jotkoff added, “Rick Scott criticizing Bill McCollum on ethics is as hypocritical as McCollum attacking Scott’s record at Columbia/HCA. It’s abundantly clear that neither Republican candidate for Governor has the ability to clean up the mess and end the culture corruption festering in Tallahassee.”
