Alex Sink for Governor: Heck of a Week

April 17, 2010 Politics Comments Off

Dear Friend,

It’s been one heck of a week!

Late last week, the legislature passed Senate Bill 6 — the bad-for-schools, bad-for-teachers, bad-for-students, cram-down education bill. And by Wednesday afternoon, we had delivered an online petition to Governor Crist signed by 13,629 Floridians, urging him to veto this harmful bill. Yesterday, the governor did just that.

This was a huge win for Florida — and a big loss for my opponent, Bill McCollum, and the rest of the political insiders in Tallahassee who wanted to put the special interests ahead of the people’s interests. … Continue Reading

Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda: Civil Discourse Makes A Difference

April 16, 2010 Politics Comments Off

To quote Albert Einstein, “Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts”.

I applaud Governor Charlie Crist for his courageous veto of Senate Bill 6. This veto is proof that thoughtful and sincere public pressure does work. Tens of thousands of you wrote, emailed and called to let the Governor know what was on your mind.

As I wrote earlier this week in a “My View” regarding the wrong headed effort to balance the budget on the backs of public employees published by the Tallahassee Democrat, speaking out can make a difference. The veto is evidence that when enough people engage in the process with intelligence and passion, those in power listen.

Please continue to engage in the political process. Make your voices heard. As your elected Representative, I am here to leverage your energy, dedication and commitment as we partner to make excellence the focus of public policy in Florida.

Statement from Representative Dwight M. Bullard, District 118 in Response to Governor Charlie Crist’s Veto of SB 6

“Today Governor Crist issued the veto of Senate Bill 6. I want to join my fellow Floridians, but more importantly my brothers and sisters in the teaching profession in applauding the Governor for his efforts. What this veto represents is the prevailing voice of democracy in the state of Florida. The message that everyday Floridians put forth via e-mail, phone calls, letters and faxes was clear. Before making decisions that affect the people of Florida, allow our voices to be heard.”

“I want to applaud each and every Floridian that made their voice heard. Today is a proud day for the students, parents and teachers of this great state! “

Statement by Sen. Frederica S. Wilson (D-Miami Gardens) on the Governor’s Veto of SB 6

TALLAHASSEE – State Senator Frederica Wilson issued the following statement on Governor Crist’s decision to veto Senate Bill 6 today:

“I applaud Governor Crist for standing up for our teachers and our public school system today by vetoing Senate Bill 6. This legislation was not only punitive, but would have had a devastating effect on our students, especially those in our under-served populations.

“I have received countless letters and phone calls from concerned teachers, administrators, and parents opposing this bill. Our public school system has been under attack in the past years by many of these kinds of conservative ideological proposals, and Senate Bill 6 would have continued the assault on our schools, our teachers, and our students. … Continue Reading

Adam Fetterman for State Representative: Sometimes the “Good Guys” Win

April 15, 2010 Politics Comments Off

Today the Governor of Florida vetoed a very bad bill.

This bill, Senate Bill 6, would have put Tallahassee bureaucrats in charge of our community schools. It would have punished even good teachers and would have forced some of our best educators out of a job. And it would have threatened the very real progress and improvement our children are benefiting from every day. … Continue Reading

April 13, 2010 Government Comments Off

by Josh Hafenbrack on April 13, 2010

Gov. Charlie Crist appears ready to veto SB6, the controversial teacher-tenure bill. But on March 25, his education policy chief, Terry Golden, supported the bill as a representative of the “Executive Office of the Governor.” Golden filled out an appearance card — and checked “proponent” — when the bill was up in Anitere Flores’s PreK-12 Education Committee. … Continue Reading

Over 11,800 signatures — in just three days. Senator Sobel to Gov. Crist: Veto SB6

Senator Eleanor Sobel (D-Hollywood) sent the following letter to Gov. Crist this morning, asking him to veto SB6:

April 12, 2010

Office of Governor Charlie Crist
State of Florida
The Capitol
400 S. Monroe St.
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0001

Dear Governor Crist:

I respectfully request that you veto Senate Bill 6 – Relating to Educational Personnel. As a public servant for more than 17 years, and as a teacher by trade—with advanced degrees—I am strongly concerned this legislation will negatively affect the teaching profession. I ask you to exercise your veto power because I truly believe SB 6 would demoralize an entire profession, undermine an already underfunded public education system, and further damage Florida’s already poor national reputation in education. … Continue Reading
